Ogbodo urges support for Okuama IDPs as communities donate food items

Guardian Nigeria 2024/10/6

The Chairman of the Ewu-Okuama Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Management Committee, Abraham Ogbodo, has called on good-spirited individuals and corporate organisations to support the Delta State Government’s efforts at resettling the displaced indigenes of Okuama.

Ogbodo, a former Editor of The Guardian Newspaper, stated this at the weekend when leaders of Oghara and Edjeba communities, in Agbarha-Otor kingdom, during a solidarity visit to the camp, donated food items for the upkeep of the displaced persons.

While applauding the gestures, he noted that the people of Okuama are experiencing a serious humanitarian crisis that calls for the support of both the federal and state governments, as well as international donor agencies.

He stressed: “The task of rebuilding Okuama and resettling the displaced people back to their ancestral land is a huge one that should not be left for the Delta State Government.

“What played out today is a show of support from my paternal and maternal communities of Oghara and Edjeba, in the Agbarha-Otor kingdom. They pulled their resources together to support the work that their son is doing.”

This also shows that people trust what we are doing here at Ewu-Okuama IDP Camp.”

He noted that though the epicentre of the crisis is in Urhobo land, which is why they have seen that most of the relief interventions have come from Urhobo people and groups, it shouldn’t however be so. He stressed that this is a humanitarian crisis that should not be viewed from ethnic prism.

Ogbodo added that the United Nations (UN) and anyone or institution, who believes in a shared humanity, should be interested in how to rebuild Okuama and resettle the people.
