The voting booths have closed in the United Kingdom and early indications suggest the centre-left Labour Party is on the brink of a supermajority as the Conservatives stand to lose more than half their seats.

Labour on track for landslide win in UK general election

The voting booths have closed in the United Kingdom election and Labour leader Keir Starmer is nearing the finish line for a likely historic victory.

Early declarations can be expected to arrive around midnight local time (9am Friday in Australia) but this could be earlier or later depending on results.

Final polling data on Thursday indicated Labour would form a “supermajority” in the biggest election victory in modern British history.

There has been little doubt the centre-left party would sweep the election with the only question hanging in the balance is whether Mr Starmer could surpass Tony Blair’s 1997 supermajority.

According to the UK’s YouGov MRP poll, Labour could earn an extra 229 seats from the 2019 election to capture a total of 431 members of parliament.

Due to strict media blackout laws, campaign activities and opinion polls have remained silent while polls were open.

Mr Starmer has repeated his call to arms on social media and declared a vote for Labour would be a “vote for change”.

“I’ve changed the Labour Party. If you put your trust in me by voting Labour, I will change the country,” the Labour leader wrote on Thursday.

“Britain’s future is on the ballot.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has appeared resigned to vacate 10 Downing Street and simply focused his efforts on damage control to “stop the Labour supermajority”.

“It’s time to stop the Labour supermajority that would mean higher taxes for the rest of your life,” Mr Sunak wrote on Thursday.

Labour has campaigned on increased housing, nationalised energy, higher minimum wages and boosted healthcare.

Victory for Labour would spell the end of 14 years of Conservative government as the Tories’ popularity has diminished with the consequences of Brexit and a struggling economy.

Labour has been predicted to earn 431 seats, the Conservatives 102 seats, Liberal Democrats 72 seats, Scottish National Party 18 seats, Reform UK 3 seats, Plaid 3 seats and Green 2 seats.
