The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has presented the democracy Cup to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

This event commemorates 30 years of the 4th Republic of Ghana and reflects the nation’s commitment to democratic governance.

The Speaker took the opportunity to reflect on President Akufo-Addo’s televised address on April 28, 2022, which officially launched the 30th anniversary celebrations of the 4th Republic.

“It was in his address that the President set the tone for this momentous occasion,” Speaker Bagbin noted, emphasising Parliament’s dedication to promoting democratic values throughout the anniversary year.

Speaker Bagbin highlighted the range of activities organised over the past six months to mark the anniversary, including public lectures, mock parliaments, and extensive engagements with various segments of Ghanaian society, such as chiefs, clergy, students, and citizens.

“These initiatives have been pivotal in celebrating our democratic achievements and fostering national unity,” the Speaker said.

Looking forward, Speaker Bagbin announced an upcoming football match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, scheduled for Wednesday, 17 July 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The match, part of the anniversary celebrations, aims to engage the youth, promote peace and unity, and foster a sense of national cohesion ahead of the December 2024 elections.

A curtain-raiser match between Parliament and former Black Stars players will precede the main event. “I extend a heartfelt invitation to the President to join us for this exciting match and continue our celebration of democracy,” Speaker Bagbin said.

In response, President Akufo-Addo commended Speaker Bagbin and the leadership of Parliament for their dedication to the anniversary celebrations.

“It is to the credit of the Ghanaian people that they have embraced democracy,” the President stated, acknowledging the collaborative efforts between the Presidency and Parliament in advancing Ghana’s democratic ideals.

President Akufo-Addo also commended the broad representation of both sides of Parliament at the event.

“I congratulate the Speaker and the House for their inclusive approach to this significant milestone,” he added.

Attendees at the ceremony included Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Secretary to the President Nana Bediatuo Asante, Clerk to Parliament Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, Deputy Clerk Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, Minority Chief Whip Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, Coordinating Director of the Public Affairs Subdivision Madam Kate Addo, Director of Media Relations David Damoah, and other top officials from both the Presidency and Parliament.
