Late Marriage And Infertility: Are you and your partner married late? Struggling to have a baby? Well, you are not alone. Many couples are battling infertility and one of the factors is late marriage. This article sheds light on some vital options for couples to fulfil the dream of parenthood. Gone are the days when men and women would get married in their early 20s or late 20s. When it comes to Metropolitan cities, a majority of people are career-driven and marry late. It is only in their mid-30s or later, that the idea of getting married sounds exciting for them.

Moreover, the professions these people choose are hectic and require diligence and hard work due to which they lack time to mingle with other people and explore the idea of marriage. Being successful and financially secure is important for men and women now.

According to Dr Swarna Goyal, Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Lilavati Hospital, late marriages can mean infertility. Yes, you have heard it right! Over 10% of couples may experience infertility due to late marriages. So, not only alcohol, obesity, endometriosis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), or age, but even late marriages are known to hurt fertility. It is a known fact that infertility means the inability to get pregnant.

Late Marriages And Infertility

As women age, their chances of conceiving and pregnancy drastically go down. This happens due to reduced sexual intercourse, ageing uterus, and egg cells, and poor-quality embryos. The fertility goes down right after 35 to 38 years. It is advised for women to get pregnant and deliver babies between 24-35 years. Women in their late 30s may have to face various challenges in conceiving.

Furthermore, many women are choosing egg freezing and surrogacy as options for having a child later in life when they are ready for marriage. Hence, women should have a work-life balance and plan their marriage and pregnancy accordingly. Fertility is not only a woman’s problem but even a man’s. Even male fertility declines more gradually with age and one can have a low sperm count making pregnancy a distant dream. Other potential causes can be smoking, alcohol, obesity, exposure to toxins, pollutants, pesticides, chemicals, and sedentary lifestyles.

Those women with infertility can have irregular periods, painful menses, miscarriages, weight gain, low sex drive, facial hair growth, and hormonal fluctuations. Men will have low sperm count, problems with their testicles, prostate, or sexual organs, scrotum swelling or small testicles, erection or ejaculation problems, depression, weight gain, and tiredness.

Alternatives For Infertility

Choosing alternative fertility treatments is a promising option for couples wanting to conceive. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment for infertility can help women and couples who have tried and failed to conceive naturally.

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) offers a higher success rate along with other procedures such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and egg freezing, for older couples hoping to start a family.

It is better to consult an expert and decide the appropriate option suitable for you. The doctor will examine your and your partner’s health and decide accordingly. Adhere to the instructions given by the doctor for a successful pregnancy outcome.
