Many homes in Edina's Country Club District, shown here in 1940, are at least 100 years old. The Century Homes program in Edina has recently recognized the owners of four historic houses that are over a century old. Preserving History The Century Homes program aims to raise awareness of the historical significance of these homes, spark conversations about them, and highlight ways to extend the lifespan of old houses to reduce demolition and building-related carbon emissions. This initiative is a collaboration between the Heritage Preservation Commission and the Edina Historical Society. Emily Dalrymple, the assistant city planner, stated, "This program provides the opportunity to recognize more homeowners for their preservation efforts in Edina. As homeowners share their home's history, it engages the community in a meaningful conversation." Celebrating Legacy Homes participating in the Century Homes program are distinguished with a bronze plaque, symbolizing their historical importance. Edina, established as a village in the 1880s, boasts a significant number of homes dating back to 1924 or even earlier. The city's older neighborhoods, such as Morningside and the Country Club District, showcase a variety of architectural styles ranging from colonial and English cottage to Mediterranean and Arts and Crafts. Mary Agnes Ratelle, the interim executive director of the Edina Historical Society, encourages architecture enthusiasts to explore these diverse styles by driving around the city and admiring its rich heritage. Preserving the Past for the Future For those fascinated by vintage architecture, Edina offers a unique opportunity to admire and appreciate a range of architectural designs from different eras. The Century Homes program not only honors the legacy of these historic houses but also encourages a deeper appreciation for Edina's rich architectural history. By recognizing and preserving these century-old homes, the program contributes to the sustainable development of the city, promoting a greener environment and preserving its cultural heritage.
