MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A woman and a man were killed after a shooting Monday morning in southeast Shelby County, officials said.

FOX13 spoke with the family who identified the victims as Anthonese Stewart and Gary Newman. Stewart is the niece to popular Memphis community activist Frank Gottie.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO), deputies responded about 5:15 a.m. to a shooting on the 7600 block of Newfound Gap Road and found two people had been shot.

A woman who would only identify herself to FOX13 as Rita was shocked to hear of the gun violence in her neighborhood.

"I've lived here for quite a while and nothing ever goes on," Rita said. "You never thought, you know, nothing could go on like that. But, you know, this is Memphis. Things happen every day."

Stewart died at the scene, while Newman had critical injuries when he was rushed to a hospital, where he later died, SCSO said.

Other neighbors agree with Rita, surprised at the violence in what they is an otherwise quiet neighborhood. "I'm surprised they got shootings over here anyways. It's just a very quiet neighborhood. Nobody messes with anybody," said one neighbor who did not want to be identified for fear of their safety. "It's kind of shocking seeing all of this this morning."

The sheriff's office did not release further details about what led to the gunfire.
