TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A family is searching for answers after a major mix-up at a Florida cemetery led to someone else being buried in their loved one’s grave.

The burial for Leodan Delgado’s 93-year-old grandma, who died on June 23, was scheduled for July 2 at the Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South cemetery in Kendall. However, when he got there at 2 p.m., he found the plot had already been occupied.

“We discovered that another person has been buried in my grandmother’s space, and we are very offended,” Delgado told NBC affiliate WTVJ. “We feel very bad because right now, we have nowhere to bury her.”

Delgado said his grandmother’s plot had already been paid for and family members had gone to the funeral home just days before to make arrangements for the service.

The mishap reportedly happened around 1 p.m.

“They’ve told us it was a mistake,” Delgado said. “It’s unbelievable.”

According to WTVJ, the family was told they’d have to wait until the funeral home dug out the body of the person who was placed in their grandmother’s grave by accident. Only then would be buried in her designated plot.

Mario Marquez, the son of the deceased woman, said the funeral home notified the family of the person who was removed from the plot; however, he remains skeptical.

“Someone from the office told us they had informed his family, but they said they wouldn’t return [to check out the situation],” Marquez said. “I doubt that.”

Aside from the heartbreaking mix-up, the family told WTVJ they had to wait for hours to say their final goodbyes to their loved one, causing more pain to their grief.

“Having to wait three hours for them to bury my mom seems like a lack of respect, ethics, and education, everything,” Marquez told WTVJ.

WTVJ reached out to the cemetery for a statement but has yet to hear back.
