Exciting New Shows and Movies to Enjoy on Prime Video This Weekend: ‘Space Cadet’ and More
This holiday weekend, there are tons of great shows and movies to stream, from the new Starz series Down In The Valley, to the Emma Roberts comedy Space Cadet on Prime and the new animated film The Imaginary on Netflix.
On top of that, you can catch seven new Bluey shorts on Disney+, the streaming premiere of Back to Black on Peacock, and Shark Week kicks off on Max this Sunday. Not sure which new releases to check out? Let us here at Decider help you figure out what to watch this weekend and where to stream it.
In the new Prime Video comedy Space Cadet, Emma Roberts plays Rex, a.k.a. Florida Woman, a hard partying bartender with dreams of being an astronaut. On Netflix, you and the kids can check out The Imaginary, a new animated feature from director Yoshiyuki Momose, who also worked as an animator for Studio Ghibli. And on Starz, check out the new docu-series Down In The Valley, a down and dirty travel and culture show hosted by P-Valley‘s Nicco Annan.
In Space Cadet, Emma Roberts starts off as an underachieving bartender whose dreams of being an astronaut are just that: dreams. After managing to scam her way into a NASA program, she realizes that yes, this actually is rocket science. She may not have the brains, but dammit she has moxie and that’s worth even more than intensive flight training and a scientific background.
The new Starz series Down In The Valley actually had its digital premiere on the Starz app last Friday, but in case you missed it, you can catch the series premiere and episode two Friday July 5, when they’ll both be airing on Starz. The new half-hour series is hosted by Nicco Annan, known for playing Uncle Clifford on P-Valley, who takes viewers on a tour of the Deep South, sharing stories and the culture of the people he visits.
This week, Netflix releases The Imaginary, the newest film from Studio Ponoc. Ponoc is the animation company founded by former Studio Ghibli producer Yoshiaki Nishimura, and The Imaginary is directed by Ghibli’s former lead animator, Yoshiyuke Momose. The film, based on the children’s book by A.F . Harrold, is a tale of a young girl and her imaginary friend Rudger and the voyage he goes on without her once he realizes he may not remain in her imagination forever. Voices in the film include Hayley Atwell, Kal Penn, and Ted Lasso‘s Jeremy Swift.
