PSUSD Foundation's Shoes for Students Program Making a Difference in the Lives of Students in Need

apexlifehub.com 1 day ago

The PS Unified School District Foundation is on a mission to make a difference in the lives of students through their Shoes for Students program. With the goal of providing 2,500 pairs of shoes to K-12 students in need before the start of the 2024-2025 school year, the Foundation is calling on the community to join in and support this worthy cause.

Meeting Critical Needs
PSUSD Student Support Services has identified shoes as a critical need throughout the school district. Foundation director Ellen Goodman emphasized that shoes are the most requested item by students and families in the district.

Addressing Poverty in the Region
Despite being located in a wealthy community, the Palm Springs Unified School District has the highest poverty rate in Riverside County. With 97 percent of students considered "socioeconomically disadvantaged" by the state of California, the need for support is significant.

Innovative Programs Supported
The PSUSD Foundation supports a wide range of innovative educational programs, including eSports, robotics, automotive careers academy, sports institute, wellness centers, Native studies curriculum, college scholarships, mentoring, and musical-theater training.

The Impact of New Shoes
A recent study at Texas Christian University found that receiving a new pair of athletic shoes can have a profound impact on underprivileged youth. The study showed significant increases in students' academic, athletic, and social engagement.

Hope for the Future
While the Foundation is working tirelessly to provide 2,500 pairs of shoes this summer, there is hope for expanding the Shoes for Students program to reach more families in need. The program's impact goes beyond just providing footwear; it is a symbol of care and support for students facing challenging circumstances.

Making a Difference, One Pair of Shoes at a Time
Yessenia Calderon, a parent benefiting from the program, shared how new shoes brought joy and relief to her family during a difficult time. For families like the Calderons, the Shoes for Students program is a beacon of hope and a reminder that there are people looking out for them.
