The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Yenagoa Law Week 2024 in Yenagoa featured a speech by Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) of Nigeria, on June 28, 2024. According to THISDAYLIVE, Heineken Lokpobiri emphasized that the government’s actions are in line with global practices. He noted that President Tinubu is taking necessary measures to support the most vulnerable people in society. Lokpobiri highlighted that bold decisions are sometimes required for the country’s prosperity and that the removal of the fuel subsidy on the president’s first day in office was essential to avoid a crisis similar to Venezuela’s. He reassured that the government is acting with the country’s best interests at heart and that the challenges faced in Nigeria are not unique but common worldwide.

Additionally, former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan commented on the widespread economic hardships affecting Nigeria. He stated that these challenges are not confined to the legal profession but impact all sectors and professions. Jonathan called for collaborative efforts to find solutions to the country’s current economic difficulties.

As a government, President Bola Tinubu is doing whatever that is necessary to see how the country can support the most vulnerable people in society. For any society to be good, there will be times like this for a very bold decision for the interest and prosperity of this country. If the president had not taken that decision the day he was sworn in; Nigeria would have been like Venezuela. The government means well and we are doing whatever that is necessary.
