Challenges confronting Nigerian students in Diaspora surmountable, says FG

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his readiness to address all the challenges Nigerians studying abroad are facing, as well as enhancing their well-being in line with his citizen diplomacy policy.

A statement, yesterday, by Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abuja, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said Tinubu gave the assurance during the fourth Diaspora quarterly webinar lecture series hosted by NIDCOM with the theme, “Well-being of Nigerian Students Abroad: Struggles, Challenges and Solutions.”

Tinubu, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Student Engagement, Asefon Sunday Dayo; NIDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa;Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, and Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Y.D. Ahmed, said that all the fears of the students had been allayed.

Dayo, while responding to some of the issues raised by the students, admitted that the President was aware of the challenges they are facing abroad, saying that the government is working tediously to ameliorate them.

He urged the students to create more platforms to discuss and address their challenges and for their leaders to discuss the situations with the appropriate authorities.

Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke in the same vein, reiterated the commission’s commitment to supporting Nigerian students abroad within its mandate and ensuring that their welfare are taken care of.

On the issue of non-payment of scholarship awards of some students abroad by the Federal Government agencies and some state governments, she explained the interventionist roles played by her and some of the bottlenecks causing the delays, assuring that the obstacles would soon be cleared.

In his contributions, Oloyede assured the students that the board would continue to guide the students, especially on the choice of institutions of learning abroad as well as courses offered.

He advised the students and their parents to beware of fake and unaccredited universities abroad, urging them to do proper check before sending their wards to foreign universities.
