A dog with a “frog like bark” waited for a home — then came good news.

“After sitting homeless at the animal shelter for two months, this boy was just chosen,” a North Carolina animal rescue wrote July 4 on Facebook. “It’s a perfect match.”

Dexter the pup got his second chance after his now-owners experienced a loss.

“This family adopted our senior dog Cain in 2021,” Adopt an Angel rescue wrote. “He recently passed away, or as I say, in an act of love he moved over so that Dexter could have his family.”

The Wilmington-area rescue said it took in Dexter after he kept being overlooked at a nearby shelter. The organization believes he may have been passed up due to the dark color of his fur.

“He was the longest resident there,” Adopt an Angel wrote in a past social media post, though it didn’t share how Dexter first ended up in the shelter system.

Dexter was described as a friendly 3-year-old pup with a love for toys and a “funny frog like bark.” Rescuers also called him a “turn key” dog, one that would fit into any home environment.

“I know how to calm down and lay right beside you,” the rescue wrote July 3. “I am low energy in the house and have great manners. I am easily correctable, eager to please and I am just a great family dog.”

Then, Adopt an Angel shared the heartwarming update that Dexter went home with his new owners. Several people went online to congratulate the pup on his next chapter.

“We know that Dexter just hit the jackpot,” the rescue wrote.

Adopt an Angel didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on July 5. More details about its adoption process can be found at adoptanangel.net.
