No, Tina Fey Is Not Rebooting Golden Girls: Reboot Rumor Debunked (& Explained)

screenrant.com 2024/10/6
Tina Fey, Maya Rudolpha, Amy Poehler, and Lisa Kudrow photoshopped on The Golden Girls poster.

Summary

  • Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph are not rebooting The Golden Girls, despite a poster circulating on the internet.
  • Maya Rudolph debunked the Golden Girls reboot rumor, revealing it as a photoshopped poster by a Facebook page.
  • Rudolph also created other (intentionally bad) photoshopped posters of her and her famous friends as characters in classic TV sitcoms.

Despite claims to the contrary, Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph are not rebooting The Golden Girls. While fans of The Golden Girls would like a movie or TV reboot, there are no confirmed plans as of yet to do so, whether with Fey and Rudolph or otherwise. First airing in 1985, the classic sitcom followed the lives of four older women living together in a house in Miami. Dorothy (Bea Arthur), Rose (Betty White), Blanche (Rue McClanahan), and Sophia (Estelle Getty) are the witty, lovable, and young-at-heart heroines who made the show a success for seven seasons.

A reboot would have the difficult job of finding four equally funny actresses with fantastic chemistry, but Maya Rudolph and Tina Fey would be a great start. Fey and Rudolph began on SNL around the same time. Fey worked on the show from 1997 to 2007, while Rudolph was there from 2000 to 2007. Running in the same comedy circles as Amy Poehler and Rachel Dratch, Rudolph and Fey have frequently worked together in films like Wine Country and Sisters. When a rumor began about a reboot of The Golden Girls, it's not surprising it involved these esteemed female comics.

Maya Rudolph Confirmed The Tina Fey Golden Girls Poster Is Fake

A Facebook Page Created The Poster As A Joke

Split image of the fake Golden Girls poster with Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, and Lisa Kudrow and Maya Rudolph on the Seth Meyers show-1

A certain rumor began circulating online before April Fools' Day in 2024, that came from the satirical Facebook account, YODA BBY ABY. The image posted is a doctored photo of The Golden Girls with the faces of the main cast replaced by Fey (Dorothy), Rudolph (Blanche), Poehler (Sofia), and Lisa Kudrow (Rose). The actresses' faces are slightly aged, and it's actually a pretty impressive photoshop, but as Rudolph points out in her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the creator of the poster clearly took more time with Poehler and Kudrow.

Rudolph went on her old SNL castmate's show to set the record straight about the photoshopand clear the air that there are no plans for The Golden Girls reboot, at least from her camp. Rudolph also made sure to defend Poehler's honor, who was cast as the oldest Golden Girls main character, saying,

"I just want to say, for Amy: whoever did this, f— you."

The creator of the poster did seem to take extra pains to make Phoeler look much more wrinkled and older than the other women on the poster. Underneath The Golden Girls' title is the line, "10 episodes, June 2024" with the Disney+ logo at the bottom. As June 2024 has come and gone with no airing of Golden Girls reboot on Disney+, or any other platform, hopefully, the joke won't be fooling any more hopeful fans.

Rudolph's Other Photoshopped Sitcom Posters

Rudolph Remade Classic Sitcom Posters With Her Friends

As she told Seth Meyers, Rudolph was inspired by The Golden Girls poster and decided to make a few mock-ups of her own. On the show, Rudolph presented hilariously bad photoshopped posters of classic sitcoms with her famous friends' faces inserted. She proudly shows off her Happy Days, Four's Company, and Full House posters. Fey and Poehler reappear, and she even adds Jon Hamm, Jack McBrayer, and an older version of one of the Olsen twins. Her photoshop skills may not be as good as YODA BBY ABY's but as she tells Meyers,

"You guys get it."

It's a funny bit and, frankly, The Golden Girls starring Rudolph, Fey, Poehler, and Kudrow would probably be a hit, even if it was pitched at something satirical. However, it's not as if any of those performers need the work at the moment. Fey continues writing, producing, and occasionally acting in films like A Haunting in Venice; Poehler recently reprised her leading role as Joy in Inside Out 2 and is touring with Fey on their Restless Leg Tour (which Rudolph appeared on); Kudrow consistently appears in films and TV shows; and Rudolph is starring in Apple TV+'s Loot.
