Nearly 700,000 people chose to camp in Hungary last year, and the nearly two million nights they spent were shared equally between domestic and foreign tourists.

Lake Balaton is the most popular destination among campers

The growing popularity of camping shows that Hungary has excellent potential for this activity, Turizmus reports. Out of more than 270 campsites operating in Hungary in 2023, Hungarian guests were most likely to stay at Lake Balaton, with 8 out of the top 10 campsites being on the lakeshore of the Hungarian Sea. Other popular regions according to Booking include the Danube Bend and Northern Hungary, while Balatonfüred is considered the most popular for foreigners, followed by Hajdúszoboszló and Bük.

Classic, modern and family-friendly campings are also popular

“Hungary has excellent opportunities in this tourism segment as well, as visitors to Hungarian campsites can choose from a wide range of options, from high-quality mobile homes to campervans and caravans to tent pitches,” said László Könnyid, CEO of the Hungarian Tourism Agency.

It’s true that there are many different types of campsites on different booking portals. Just by browsing through the most popular campsites on Booking, you can see that the selection is extremely varied.

In Fonyód, for example, Fonyód Camping & Apartman offers waterfront accommodation with its own beach, garden and terrace, while most sites have a classic child-friendly campsite with a playground. In addition to classic campsites, you’ll also find modern, renovated accommodations such as the Kapolcsi Sziklák near Vígándpetend, which has air conditioning, a bathtub, TV and a fully equipped kitchen, as well as a bar on the campsite. Guests can also stay at Geodome tents in the Buborékpark near Szarvaskő, and yurts in Őriszentpéter’s campsite, alongside classic wooden cabins.

The natural environment is the most attractive factor of Hungarian campsites

Femina has compiled a top 6 list of the most beautiful campsites in Hungary, most of them built near natural attractions. The list includes the JUFA Vulkán Camping Resort in Celldömölk, located at the foot of the volcanic Ság Mountain, from where you can access the famous Celli Volcano Thermal Spring, or the Máré Vára Camping, which is located near Máré Vára, in the immediate vicinity of the Eastern-Mecsek Landscape Protection Area in the village of Magyaregregy.

Among the campsites by Lake Balaton, Badacsony Camping in Badacsonytomaj is located directly on the northern shore of the lake. It offers a breathtaking view of the Hungarian Sea, not to mention the permanent bathing facilities with mobile homes and both water and mountain-facing plots available for booking, in addition to tent pitches. The list includes Dieter’s Camping in Tiszafüred, a popular holiday destination too, which is located opposite the beach and thermal baths of Tiszafüred, 50 metres from Lake Tisza.

A campsite in Buda has also been added to the list, where despite the proximity of the capital, fresh air and a beautiful wooded setting await guests in the Zugligeti Niche Camping, with a long-abandoned tram stop, which has been converted into a dining area, giving the campsite a special atmosphere.
