A Southfield woman who assisted two former lovers of a male Detroit cop break into his Roseville home last year was sentenced to two years probation and received special youth status.

Dayna Sears, 23, received the probationary term and status under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act on Tuesday from Macomb County Circuit Judge Richard Caretti after pleading to reduced charges.

Sears, who was suspended as an officer at the Detroit Police Department due to the criminal case against her, declined to comment at her sentencing held remotely over Zoom video.

Sears, the least culpable and youngest of the trio, pleaded guilty in May to third-degree home invasion and malicious destruction of property between $200 and $1,000. The more serious charges of second-degree home invasion, malicious destruction of property between $1,000 and $20,000, larceny from a building and accessory after the fact were dismissed as part of a plea deal with Macomb prosecutors.

Due to her HYTA status, the convictions were immediately erased from her public record and will remain that way if she complies with probation conditions.

Her attorney, Jonathan Jones, called Sears “a good kid” and “the perfect person HYTA was designed for.”

“She’s remorseful and took responsibility,” he said. “She admitted she made a mistake and will not be defined by this. She will continue to live and grow.”

Sears is looking at attempting to rejoin the police force, he said.

Police say Sears on April 11, 2023 drove the pickup truck that was used to transport her co-defendants, Colleen Compton, 31, of Warren, and Brianna Cabano, 30, of Auburn Hills, to Otis Funches Jr.’s home, where they destroyed and stole property after the two women caught him cheating on each of them.

Compton and Cabano, who also was a Detroit cop, remain charged with second-degree home invasion, conspiracy, malicious destruction of property between $1,000 and $20,000 and larceny in a building.

They face a July 18 pretrial in circuit court.

Defense attorneys are attempting to work out plea resolutions to their cases.

Cabano and Compton allegedly jumped over the wall from the Sears’ truck parked behind the home on Huron Street near 10 Mile and Kelly roads, broke into the home and damaged and stole $20,000 worth of property. Stolen items were placed in a Dumpster by Compton and presumably collected by the waste hauler.

Text messages between Compton and Cabano show they plotted the event for three days after they discovered Funches’ two-timing.

All of the defendants have been free on personal bonds.
