Hunger not coaching to lift Super Falcons at Paris Olympics insists ex-coach Edwin Okon

Former Super Falcons coach Edwin Okon has said he believes the country will do well at the Paris 2024 Olympics because the players are driven to succeed and not because of the tactics of coach Randy Waldrum.

The Super Falcons are drawn in a tough-looking first round group along with world champions Spain, Japan and Brazil.

They begin their campaign against Brazil on July 25 in Bordeaux.

“The players are determined to do well for themselves and the country,” said Edwin Okon in a radio interview monitored by SCORENigeria

“The girls know what is at stake, they want to make it and how to go about this.

“It won’t be the coaching that will make Nigeria proud at the Olympics.”

Last year, Okon assisted coach Randy Waldrum at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

However, he was critical of the American coach for disregarding local-based players and not working with local assistants.

“I’m not against anybody, but the truth must be told – he wants ready-made players, he doesn’t take risks,” he said.

“He has no regard for local players, some of who are far better than those on the final squad (to the Olympics) and his assistants, he only relies on those he came along with.

“There are only two home-based players on the list, while I picked only five foreign pros on my squad when I took the team to the World Cup.”
