Arunachal district bordering China cut off as bridge washed away amid rain

After a heavy downpour in the Kurung Kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh, a large portion of the bridge built over the Kurung river on Monday got washed away due to heavy floods.

The Kurung Bridge connects the Kurung Kumey district headquarters with the nearest town, Sangram, which further connects with Palin, Yachuli, Yazali, and Itanagar.

The bridge assumes great significance to local connectivity as it leads towards the international border area of Sarli and Huri towards China.

Following the incessant downpour for the past five days, all the rivers in the Namsai district and Wakro circle of Lohit district are overflowing, ravaging as many as 34 villages including three villages in Wakro circle (Lohit), 11 in Chongkham circle, two in Lathao circle, three each in Piyong and Namsai circles, and 12 villages in Lekang circle (all in Namsai district), said an official from WRD, Namsai, while sounding a high alert for all the villagers in these villages.

"All the rivers in Namsai district and Wakro circle of Lohit district are flowing above the danger level due to continuous rain, affecting 34 villages", said CJ Mannou (EE, Water Resources Division, Namsai) in a report sent to the Deputy Commissioners of Namsai and Lohit on Monday.

The affected villages are Wakhetliang, Manyuliang, and Pukhuri (Wakro circle), Kherem, Pankhao, Memey, 7Kilo, Gunanagar, Chongkham, Alubari, Napotia, Morapat, Nalong and Momong (Chongkham circle), Tengapani Area and Jona-IV (Lathao circle), Phaneng, Nampoong and Nigro charali (Piyong circle), Enthem, Mengkeng miri and Namsai Circuit house (Namsai circle), Philobari, Silatoo Kachari, Mahadevpur-I and II, Dharampur, Lekang gohain, Woisali, Dirakmiri, Rajabeel, Krishnapur, Rangalibeel, Ekorani and Mohaloni (Lekang circle).

Meanwhile, the Kamlang river water entered the Barreng river due to heavy overflow, affecting all the villages on the left bank of the river, including Alubari and Napotia. Also, Tengapani river water entered the Tiyang river due to overflow of its basin. The Jengthu and Noa-Dehing rivers are flowing above danger level.

EE CJ Mannou urged various District Collectors to take a proactive step by intimating the residents of all the villages of Namsai district and Wakro circle of Lohit district to be on a high alert and not to venture near the river banks in order to prevent any untoward incident because of the bank erosion.
