Compared to its disappointing box office performance, George Miller’s latest Mad Max movie, Furiosa, has found success with its digital release. The prequel was officially released to buy or rent on digital platforms last June 25 by Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment, a month after it made its theatrical debut.

Per IndieWire, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has been leading iTunes and Fandango’s VOD charts for the past week, despite its high price point of $24.99. The post-apocalyptic action sci-fi movie has replaced John Krasinski’s fantasy comedy IF as the current leading movie for both charts. During Furiosa’s theatrical run, it failed to garner moviegoers’ attention as it only earned a worldwide gross of over $171 million against a reported budget of $168 million. Even though it had an underwhelming box office run, the film still received high praise from critics, with a Certified Fresh rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Furiosa role was considered for another actor before Anya Taylor-Joy was cast.

Following its VOD release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will then be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, beginning on Aug. 13. In a previous interview, Miller had confirmed his plans to re-release a black-and-white version of the film, which he had already completed editing. "We’ve done it already. It’s the last thing I did on this film, and I call it Tinted Black & Chrome, or I want to call it Tinted Black & Chrome," he said. "I must say, it’s really interesting. I’m still trying to demystify why the black and white, for me, has something more elemental to it. I still can’t quite put my finger on it."

Furiosa Won’t Be the Final Mad Max Movie

According to Miller, he still has another Mad Max movie that he’s currently developing, which he would like to call as “Max in the Wasteland.” The potential sequel would revolve around the titular character’s origins. "In terms of where we are going, there's this account of Max in the year before we meet him in Fury Road, which we still have," Miller revealed. "I don't want to jinx it, but it's the story we call 'Max in the Wasteland,' and it looks at what forges him as a character. If the planets align, I'd love to do it." In a previous interview, Tom Hardy admitted that he doesn’t really see himself reprising Max Rockatansky in the future.
