Donald Trump Event Hints at VP Announcement

Newsweek 2024/10/5

Donald Trump looks likely to announce his vice president just before or during the Republican National Convention, which will take place from July 15 to 18.

The fundraising committee Trump 47 has sent out several invitations to events which include "the nominee for vice president."

They include a "strength in unity reception" taking place on July 17, in Milwaukee for donors.

Another is a "freedom first event with the nominee for vice president and 45th president of the United States Donald J. Trump before he formally accepts the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention."

There has been much talk about who Trump will pick as his running mate, with options believed to include North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson and Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton.

Other popular options include Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, South Carolina Senator Tom Scott, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, New York Representative Elise Stefankik and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

Bookies favorite Bergum, who ran for the Republican nomination in 2023 himself, has been described by Trump as a "central casting" choice.

Seen as more moderate, Bergum may be a good choice to assuage any anti-MAGA sentiments in the Republican Party.

Carson is a qualified pediatric neurosurgeon who ran for the Republican nomination in 2016 and ended up working in Trump's administration.

As a Black Christian from Detroit, he may be able to bring in more Black votes for Trump, who has already seen an increase in support from communities of color.

However, he has faced controversy for comments in the past, including when he said the U.S. was in a "Gestapo age," when he said Obamacare was the "worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery" and when he said he would not agree with a Muslim person being elected as president.

He said this is because he does not believe Islam is consistent "with the values and principles of America" and the Constitution.

Nevertheless, rumors are circulating that Carson has been picked, with him being the only known contender followed by Trump on Truth Social, as of July 7.

Trump has also said he is looking at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, Senator Tim Scott, Representative Byron Donalds and former House Democrat Tulsi Gabbard.

At the end of last month, Trump teased the reveal and said he had decided on his running mate, telling Scripps News there is a "good chance" he will make the announcement at the Republican National Convention.
