Sports betting: Six sports you can bet on while waiting for football to return

It probably looks like there is a lull in the sports betting world right now, especially with the return of the big betting powerhouses — the NFL and CFB — still a few months away.

But fear not, budding bettors. There are plenty of fun things to wager on this July, including sports you may not have considered before.

You probably know all there is to know about betting on baseball this time of year. So what sports can you bet on that are, shall we say, more out of left field?

Here are six for you to consider.

1) Olympics

Yardbarker has been taking a gander at bets on the Summer Games for a couple of weeks now. In addition to betting on individuals to capture gold, you can wager on which country brings home the most hardware from Paris.

DraftKings lists the USA as the heavy -2500 favorite to bring home the most medals and the -750 favorite to win the most gold medals. However, as a Washington Post article revealed before the last Summer Games, the host country tends to win the most.

Does that encourage you to wager on France at +6500 odds to win more medals than Team USA?

You still have a couple of weeks to make that final decision.

2) Copa America

If the only international sport you care about is soccer, there are still a couple of weeks left to wager on this once-every-four-year event.

Defending champions Argentina are the +130 favorites at DK to defend their title and won their first three matches of the group stage while outscoring the competition 5-0 over that span. Inter Milan superstar Lautaro Martinez has found the back of the net four of those times and is the +130 betting favorite at DK to end the tournament with the most goals scored.

As things stand heading into July, Argentina's biggest competition following the group stage would be Venezuela and Uruguay. Both teams are dominating their respective groups and scoring at a high rate — Uruguay upended Bolivia 5-0 in Matchday 2 — so Lionel Messi's team will be challenged down the stretch.

As for your home squad, Christian Pulisic and Team USA are 25-1 long shots to win the Copa after a chippy match against Panama that resulted in a 2-1 loss.

3) Cricket

Yes, you read that right.

The U.S. may not be known for its cricket prowess, but they upset Pakistan in the group stage of the T20 World Cup last month while co-hosting with the West Indies. (Team USA was later booted from the tournament in the Super 8 stage of the competition. India won its second title since 2007.) The newsworthy victory has upped interest in this niche sport, even with the United States not having any big events on the immediate horizon.

The T20 has concluded, but the international cricket schedule continues into July and August. DK has odds posted for England's T20 Blast and The Hundred, which is split into a men's and women's competition.

Intimidated by learning the sport to bet on it? There's no need to stress. DK lets you place money line bets on which team you think will win -- regardless of how much cricket knowledge you already have.

4) Tennis

If "Challengers" didn't give you tennis fever, betting on the sport's top players this summer will.

Carlos Alcaraz defends his title listed at +240, second only to Jannick Sinner at +175. Novak Djokovic, who Alcaraz defeated in 2023, is listed at +400 odds to win his eighth Wimbledon championship. Over on the women's side of the competition, Marketa Vondrousova is a 40-1 (+4000) long shot to defend the title, while world No. 1 Iga Swiatek is the 3-1 (+300) favorite at DK to win it all.

If wagering on an all-around winner is too rich for your blood, betting on the money line for individual matches is a great way to play along for the duration of Wimbledon, especially toward the end of the tournament when the competition is at an all-time high.

5) Golf

There is still one major left this golf season before the PGA Tour heads into the FedEx Cup playoffs, and there is plenty to consider betting-wise given how crazy the 2024 campaign has already been.

Will Rory McIlroy — still fresh off of his meltdown at the U.S. Open — win the Open Championship at 7-1 odds and end his decade-long major-less streak? Will world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler add to his record-chasing season with a victory as the +450 favorite? Will U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau be LIV Golf's singular threat at the last major event of the season?

There are still a couple more events, including the John Deere Classic, that you can wager on before you put money down for the festivities at Royal Troon on July 18. This is a stretch of very competitive events you will definitely want to wager on.

6) WNBA

The WNBA's betting handle has skyrocketed this season thanks to the league's rookie star power. With the regular season roughly halfway over at the beginning of July, there is no better time to play along.

While game props are still plenty popular, the futures betting odds for individual awards are getting all the attention right now. Over at FanDuel, Las Vegas Aces center and two-time MVP A'ja Wilson is the far and away favorite to be crowned Most Valuable Player at -470 odds. (She led the league with 26.9 points heading into July.)

As far as Rookie of the Year honors go, it remains an intriguing competition between rivals Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Clark is the heavy favorite at FanDuel to win ROY honors at -600 odds while Reese is listed at +600. That being said, there is a strong argument for Reese to win after she set a new league record with 10 straight double-doubles.

With the second half of the season getting underway, there are plenty of WNBA bets to be placed this summer to keep you in the game.
