In a bid to foster positive relationships between students and law enforcement, thirty students from the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System are participating in Operation 15, a summer camp hosted by school resource officers. Building Connections Through Education: The camp aims to familiarize students with school resource officers and law enforcement, ultimately reducing crime rates during the summer break. By keeping students engaged and occupied, officers hope to steer them away from potential criminal activities. Developing Skills Beyond the Classroom: Alongside instilling discipline, officers focus on enhancing students' social skills. Deputy Chief Arron Graves of the Board of Education Police Department at SCCPSS emphasized the significance of teaching students how to build relationships and cooperate with others. A Transformative Experience: Students like Jyh'E Riley, a 10th-grade participant, shared how the camp helped them overcome shyness and develop friendships. The program not only encourages personal growth but also provides exposure to various career paths within the community. Exploring Opportunities: In addition to classroom sessions, students were taken to local community partners such as car dealerships, police and fire departments, and Hunter Army Airfield. These visits enabled students to explore different career options and gain insights into the diverse career opportunities available in their community. Through initiatives like Operation 15, SCCPSS school resource officers are not only ensuring student safety but also nurturing a generation of socially aware and engaged individuals.
