In response to the overcrowding and congestion of Lagos, the federal government selected a new capital site, Abuja, which replaced Lagos as the national capital in December 1991. Lagos state is presently governed by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on a Second term under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC), having assumed office on May 29, 2019.

Lagos has three senators representing the three senatorial districts in the state. They are:

 Senator Aburi Mukhail 

Senator Mukhail is currently serving his second term as a Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District under the platform of the APC in the 10th Assembly. Senator Idiat Oluranti

Senator Sani Wasiu
