The CMF Phone 1, Nothing’s latest midrange offering, has been put under the microscope by repair experts at PBK. The phone boasts a sleek design and some interesting features. But its repairability has proven to be a point of concern.

PBK Shows How Hard It Is to Repair CMF Phone 1

The CMF Phone 1 is marketed as a device that is easy to use and repair. However, the teardown video tells a different story. Removing the back cover is the first hurdle. Beneath it lies a plastic cover with a clear warning about voiding the warranty if removed. This is disappointing. Other brands like HMD have made strides in user-repairable devices with models like the Nokia G22 and G42.

PBK encountered further obstacles during the disassembly process of Phone 1. Several screws are covered with tape. This makes it difficult to open the phone without leaving evidence. Additionally, a crucial screw is hidden beneath a bottom knob used for accessories. The battery is secured with a removal tape. But removing it seems to be more challenging than expected.

Despite these issues, the teardown did reveal some positive aspects. The CMF Phone 1 has impressive cooling features. That includes heat dissipation shields and thermal paste to keep the Mediatek Dimensity 7300 5G processor cool. The aluminum shell and numerous screws. They contribute to the phone’s overall sturdiness.

However, a critical assembly error during the teardown resulted in a damaged connector. This highlights potential quality control issues. Because of these challenges, PBK awarded the CMF Phone 1 a repairability score of 6.5 out of 10.

The CMF Phone 1 offers a decent build quality and cooling system. But its repairability falls short of expectations. Consumers looking for a device that is easy to repair may want to consider other options. As the market for repairable electronics grows, it’s essential for manufacturers like Nothing to prioritize user accessibility.
