The search for a new coach for the Super Eagles of Nigeria may be nearing its conclusion almost as quickly as it began.

The Nigerian national team is once again without a manager following the unexpected departure of Finidi George.

The 53-year-old chose to step down after a series of disappointing results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against South Africa and the Republic of Benin.

However, in the wake of Finidi's resignation, a report has emerged indicating that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reached an agreement with a high-profile manager to take charge of the Super Eagles.

NFF agrees to a deal with a high-profile coach?

According to a report from OwnGoalNigeria, the football federation, which initially shifted its focus to finding a foreign tactician, has agreed to terms with a high-profile manager for the Super Eagles.

The report outlines that the manager, whose name is yet to be disclosed to the public, following progressive talks with the federation, has accepted a pay cut to take over the coaching vacancy.

The report concludes by stating the manager is one of many foreign tacticians who have previously expressed interest in coaching Nigeria. However, he is now leading the race to become the next Super Eagles coach, primarily based on recommendations.

The Nigerian team is at risk of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup after failing to secure a victory in any of its opening four fixtures.

According to data from FotMob, the Super Eagles currently sit fifth in their group C standings, just ahead of the bottom-placed Zimbabwe.
