The Schmeichels and Haalands

History is being made in the United States, with LeBron James and Bronny James teaming up with the LA Lakers, set to become the first father and son to play together in the NBA.

A father and son have never played a Premier League match together, but 23 sons have emulated their fathers by following them into the competition.

AFC Bournemouth striker Justin Kluivert, the son of former Newcastle United star Patrick, was the latest to do so last campaign.

Father and sons to play in the PL
Who are the most notable?

Two stars of the inaugural 1992/93 Premier League season, Peter Schmeichel and Ian Wright, have seen their sons enjoy great success in the competition.

Kasper Schmeichel lifted the Premier League Trophy with Leicester City in 2015/16 and made 284 appearances in the competition, only 26 fewer than his father Peter, who was a five-time title-winner with Manchester United.

Wright, who scored 113 Premier League goals in 213 matches, has two sons who played in the top flight - Shaun Wright-Phillips and Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Shaun came through Manchester City's academy and made his debut for the club, while also enjoying spells at Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, with Bradley also representing City 32 times. Of all 23 sons to feature in the competition, he has played the most, with 315 appearances, followed by the 304 of Jack Cork.

Paul Ince and Steve Bruce were both part of the Man Utd side alongside Peter Schmeichel that won the title in 1992/93. Their sons Tom Ince and Alex Bruce also played together, for Hull City in 2014/15, and have each made 48 Premier League appearances.

Erling Haaland emulated his father Alf Inge Haaland when he joined Man City, and he made an immediate impact by winning a historic Treble in an incredible 2022/23 debut season, following that achievement with a second successive Premier League title and Golden Boot award in 2023/24.

Alf made 181 appearances for Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and City between 1994 and 2004.

Brennan Johnson, whose dad David Johnson played for Ipswich in 2000/01, also enjoyed a memorable debut campaign in 2022/23. The striker scored eight goals and produced three assists to help Nott'm Forest secure their top-flight status.

Following a move to Tottenham Hotspur in August 2023, Johnson overcame an indifferent start in north London to finish the 2023/24 season with five goals and 10 assists.

More to follow this season?

The list could grow in 2024/25, with a number of players hoping to follow in their fathers' footsteps by making a Premier League debut.

Chelsea midfielder Leo Castledine is the son of Stewart Castledine, who played for Wimbledon. Leo, 18, signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract at Stamford Bridge in December 2023 and made his senior debut in Chelsea's Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg win against Middlesbrough the following month.

West Ham United's Freddie Potts, son of Steve Potts, will hope to follow in the footsteps of brother Dan Potts, who made two top-flight appearances with the Hammers. Freddie spent the 2023/24 season on loan at League One side Wycombe Wanderers, where he won the Player of the Year award after helping the Chairboys reach the EFL Trophy final at Wembley Stadium.

Brighton & Hove Albion's Jensen Weir is another player hoping that the experience gained on loan at Blackpool and Port Vale last season will help him add to the number of fathers and sons to appear in the Premier League. Jensen is the son of former Everton defender David Weir.

Brentford duo Romeo Beckham and Kyreece Lisbie also have ambitions of following in their fathers' footsteps - David Beckham and Kevin Lisbie respectively - having been a part of the Bees' B team last season.

Stanley Mills, currently at Everton and the son of former Leeds and Man City defender Danny Mills, hopes to be pushing for a place in Sean Dyche's senior squad this season. Stanley joined League One side Oxford United on loan last August before suffering a knee injury that cut short his season.

Meanwhile, Ipswich Town forward George Hirst, son of former Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday star David Hirst, is returning to the top flight and aiming to add to the two Premier League appearances that he made when playing for Leicester City in 2019/20.
