ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has underscored Nigeria’s grave security challenges posed by insurgents and bandits,  reiterating the nation’s struggles against these threats to sovereignty during the session held at the Government House, Asaba.

The Governor stated this during  meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, led by Hon. Babajimi Benson.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed the establishment of an Ad-hoc Committee to address humanitarian crises stemming from the Okuama community conflict. He reassured citizens that both President Bola Tinubu and the Army high command had guaranteed the protection of innocent Okuama residents amidst the turmoil.

Highlighting ongoing efforts, the Governor emphasized plans for the rehabilitation of affected individuals, asserting, “Efforts are in top gear to rehabilitate the people of the community.”

Governor Oborevwori stated, “Without doubt, this is one of the most important committees in the House because it has to do with the defence of our territorial integrity.”

The Governor also shed light on a peace accord preceding the Okuama incident between Okoloba and Okuama communities. Following a visit to the affected area, Governor Oborevwori announced the formation of the Ewu IDP Committee aimed at facilitating rehabilitation efforts starting next week.

Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson, condemned the crisis leading to the demise of 17 military personnel in Okuama. He urged the military to facilitate the safe return of innocent citizens to the community and appealed to President Tinubu for assistance in rebuilding the town, acknowledging potential widespread destruction.

Hon. Benson stressed the committee’s mission to foster a peaceful resolution without victimizing any party involved. He commended Governor Oborevwori for his collaborative efforts with stakeholders, including the President and the military, towards resolving the crisis and ensuring the safe return of the detained Ewu king.
