Local authorities in Warrap State on Thursday said two assailants were shot dead and four others wounded on Tuesday when armed youth from the Apuk Jurwiir area attempted to raid cattle from the Thony area.

Marco Agor Malang, the Tonj South County commissioner, told this publication that the security situation is now calm and that the rustlers are being pursued by security forces.

“On Tuesday this week, armed youth from Apuk Jurwiir attempted to raid cattle from the Thony grazing area,” he explained. “A shepherd ran back to cattle camp and informed the cattle owners who came and fought off the attackers leading to the killing of two people from Apuk Jurwiir and four people were wounded, two from Thony and the other two from Apuk Jurwiir.”

Commissioner Agor added: “Those who are wounded are not in very bad shape and those with slight bullet injuries decided to remain in the local clinics outside town while those with severe wounds are receiving medication in Tonj South Civil Hospital.”

The official also said he received information from his counterpart in Lakes State’s Cueibet County that the youth there are mobilizing in forests and that this had created panic among the neighboring communities of Thony, Bongo, and Muok of Tonj South County.

Meanwhile, William Wol, the Warrap State spokesperson, confirmed the incident.

“In Tonj South, there was an incident that led to two people being killed and four wounded between Thony and Apuk-Jurwiir communities on Tuesday afternoon,” he said. “The county commissioner who was in Kuajok left and immediately went to the incident area and successfully stopped the clashes and people are back to their normal life.”
