10 Cheapest Hybrids You Can Buy In 2024

For years, hybrids were the butt of jokes, with the punchline being the Toyota Prius. Fortunately, consumers have grown up and come to realize that a vehicle with fantastic gas mileage is a pretty sweet deal, especially when you grab it on the cheap. Hybrids have never been more affordable, and even the affordable ones come in enough shapes and sizes to fit just about any buyer's needs. While some of these cars may be lacking in the power department, we believe you'll stop caring once your gas station visits only start happening once a month.

We've compiled a list of the 10 cheapest hybrid models on sale in 2024, and to our surprise, only two cracked past $30,000. Some of these models are painfully cheap, so cheap it has us wondering why anyone purchasing a regular old car wouldn't just go for a hybrid and enjoy the improved fuel economy instead. Many of these hybrids are also comprised of the dying sedan segment and represent great ways to get into one before the segment is gone forever.

CarBuzz compiled this list using the suggested MSRP provided by the various manufacturers' official websites.

10 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

2024 Sonata Side Profile
Hyundai
  • Fuel Economy: 44/51/47 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 192 horsepower

First on our list is the freshly redesigned Hyundai Sonata, and it may be the most attractive hybrid in the lineup. It combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 192 horsepower, which should offer decent motivation. The Sonata Hybrid's interior is upscale and spacious, featuring a large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and great standard features like a digital key and wireless charging. Of course, it has your standard list of safety driver assistance systems, too, but given it's the most expensive model here, you already expected that, didn't you?

Starting Price: $31,725

Toyota
  • Fuel Economy: 41/38/39 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 219 horsepower

The only thing that could make one of the best SUVs on the market better was hybridization, and the Rav4 Hybrid truly delivers. It features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with electric motors that delivers a combined 219 horsepower, a healthy amount for a vehicle of this size. Thanks to an electric motor on the rear axle, all Hybrid models come with AWD, which is a plus. Its interior is spacious, with ample cargo space and modern technology, including a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and the excellent Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite, which includes a massive amount of driver assistance and safety features.

8 Kia Sportage Hybrid

Starting Price: $28,590

Kia
  • Fuel Economy: 42/ 44/ 43 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 227 horsepower

For 2023, the Kia Sportage experienced a pretty comprehensive redesign that brought with it the introduction of an optional hybrid powertrain. It features a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine paired with an electric motor that produces 227 horsepower, but bumping up to the PHEV version can get you an even healthier 261 horsepower. The Sportage Hybrid’s spacious interior includes modern amenities like a massive touchscreen and lovely appointments that make it feel upscale. However, the best part about this model is that it comes in FWD or AWD, giving you the option of better fuel economy or better performance.

7 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Starting Price: $28,400

Toyota
  • Fuel Economy: 53/ 50/ 51 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 232 horsepower

As a perennial bestseller, Toyota has taken a big leap with the 2025 Camry as it's the first generation to be offered strictly with a hybrid powertrain. The setup comprises a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors with up to 225 horsepower on FWD versions and 232 hp on AWD versions. Up to 51 MPG combined is possible, but only on the light, entry-level LE trim. Its interior is well-appointed with quality materials, a user-friendly infotainment system, and, again, the excellent Toyota Safety Sense suite. The new version is a masterclass in making a great car better, and we believe its changes have made it the most important vehicle in the world.

6 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

Starting Price: $28,220

Toyota
  • Fuel Economy: 45/ 38/ 41 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 196 horsepower

The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid (the second-most reliable Toyota you can buy new) is undoubtedly one of the best hybrids on the market thanks to its extremely cheap starting price and host of amazing features. At your disposal is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and three electric motors, producing 196 horsepower and giving you standard AWD because of it. The interior is a familiar place, as it closely resembles the Corolla's, and in the lower trims, it isn't fancy at all, but you'll love the extra space at your disposal that makes the car feel significantly roomier and gives you more practicality. The base trim doesn't have much in the way of technology, but it does come with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which adds improvements to the sensors and cameras, upgrading the abilities of the safety systems, including in previous versions of this safety suite.

5 Toyota Prius

Starting Price: $27,950

World Car Awards
  • Fuel Economy: 57/ 56/ 57 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 194/196 horsepower

The updated Prius finally proved you don't need to drive something that looks lame if you want to get good fuel economy. The model comes in FWD or AWD now, but more importantly, it offers 194 hp (FWD) and 196 hp (AWD), respectively, giving you much more power than before, making hills or highway merges much less of a hassle. You could still go with the Corolla hybrid over this, but the Prius gets you more room to work with and equal amounts of technology and safety features depending on the trim you pick. You also have the benefit of driving the oldest hybrid on the market, which earns you a bit of street cred in our book.

4 Kia Niro Hybrid

Starting Price: $26,940

2023-2024 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid Front Angle
Kia
  • Fuel Economy: 53/ 54/ 53 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 139 horsepower

The Niro is a great deal, offering some of the best fuel economy out of the group. Just don't expect any performance out of it. It features a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, sending an anemic 139 horsepower to the front wheels only. The Niro Hybrid offers a spacious and practical interior, equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 4.3-inch driver display ahead of you. Thanks to its redesign a couple of years ago, the car is also better looking than ever before, and if the regular hybrid model isn't enough for you, you can look at the PHEV and fully electric variants as well.

If you like this, you might want to wait for the rumored Kia Seltos Hybrid, as the Niro is getting a bit old.

3 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Starting Price: $26,250

2024 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid front
Hyundai
  • Fuel Economy: 51/ 58/ 54 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 139 horsepower

Given the Elantra hybrid shares the same powertrain with the Kia Niro, it's no surprise the sedan offers even better fuel economy in return. Thanks to a slight redesign, it's better looking than before, but it's still a rather basic-looking sedan, and the price has been kept low. The Elantra Hybrid’s interior is stylish and comfortable, with the entry-level Blue trim offering a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and blue touchscreen, giving you plenty of technology to work with. It's a perfect choice for urban commuters trying to save up front and down the road, but it isn't as useful as the next option.

2 Ford Maverick Hybrid

Starting Price: $25,420

Jared Rosenholz / CarBuzz / Valnet
  • Fuel Economy: 42/ 33/ 37 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 191 horsepower

The Ford Maverick is an incredible pickup offering almost all the abilities you could want in a package that will work in the city. What's even better is Ford was able to fit a capable hybrid powertrain in the truck so cheaply, making it a uniquely compelling option if you're looking for a run-around vehicle. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor makes 191 horsepower and sends all of it to the front wheels, which further helps with efficiency. The base XL trim is very spartan, but you do get things like cruise control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto capability, and of course, fantastic steel wheels. It's one of the greatest deals on sale today, and we can't wait to see how it gets even better when the refresh arrives in the next few months.

1 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Starting Price: $23,500

2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid front
Toyota
  • Fuel Economy: 53/ 46/ 50 MPG City/Highway/Combined
  • Power: 138 horsepower

The cheapest hybrid you can purchase in America is the Toyota Corolla Hybrid, coming in at a mere $23,500. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors produces 134 horsepower and can send that power to your choice of front or all-wheel drive. The power deficit is a big way Toyota separates the Prius and the Corolla now. The interior is comfortable and well-appointed, but you're expecting that from such a famous budget model. You get an eight-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and LED headlights even in the base model. Toyota Safety Sense is standard, too, so you aren't sacrificing safety while on a budget.
