The Nigerian architectural studio, SI.SA, has announced that the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History has been shortlisted as a finalist for the World Architecture Festival Award.

Led by architect Seun Oduwole, the project is part of an urban regeneration initiative in Lagos Island, Nigeria. The Centre aims to restore a 1928 public swimming pool and create a 1,000 sq. m. exhibition gallery dedicated to Yoruba history and culture.

The design draws inspiration from traditional Yoruba architecture, incorporating elements such as a fractal building form, dyed tyrolean finishes, and a metallic screen symbolizing a weave. The Centre will feature a green roof to integrate the building with the landscape and reduce thermal load.

Celebrating the rich heritage of the Yoruba people, the permanent exhibition will showcase the language, rituals, festivals, and deities, ensuring the legacy of Yoruba culture is preserved for future generations. The John Randle Centre is set to become a vital cultural landmark, attracting Yoruba and African people from around the world and boosting tourism in Lagos. SI.SA will present the project at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore this November.
