One Killed, 18 Rescued In Jigawa Boat Mishap

Police in Jigawa State have confirmed that one person has died, 18 have been rescued, and one is still missing after a boat capsized in Kalgwai village, Auyo Local Government Area.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by powerful waves and overloading, which made it impossible for the driver to steer the canoe.

The incident occurred when a group of about 20 marketers from Kwalgwai village, including males and females, boarded the canoe to travel across the Kwalgai River to Hadin village.

The canoe capsized en route, prompting a swift response from divers, fishermen, and good Samaritans, as well as a team of policemen led by the DPO.

As of the time of this report, 18 passengers have been rescued alive, while two female passengers remain missing.

Unfortunately, one of the missing females, Habiba Ado, has been confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

The search and rescue operation is ongoing.
