PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man is facing felony assault and other charges after a crash allegedly caused his car to flip over on top of a motorcyclist on the Sunset Highway Wednesday afternoon.

Just after 3 p.m., Portland Police officers responded to a report of the crash near Highway 26 eastbound at the Southwest Sylvan Road overpass.

On arrival, they found an overturned Subaru Outback and a motorcycle on its side.

Early investigation found the motorcyclist – a 47-year-old Washington resident – had initially been riding between lanes. The driver – identified as 60-year-old David Bumgardner – allegedly believed the motorcycle had hit his car, but kept going.

Officials say Bumgardner then pulled onto the shoulder of the road and followed the motorcyclist at high speed. Once the motorcyclist slowed down for a traffic control sign, Bumgardner was reportedly unable to stop and hit the motorcycle, causing his car to overturn on top of the motorcyclist.

After being freed from underneath the car by passerby, the motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Bumgardner was uninjured in the crash, authorities say.

Bumgardner was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of second and third-degree assault, reckless driving and recklessly endangering another person.

The motorcyclist was served a citation for driving uninsured, careless driving, failure to drive within a lane, driving without a motorcycle endorsement and failure to register a motor vehicle.
