cbr.com 2 days ago

This article contains descriptions of violence, supernatural elements, and horror.

Many people are familiar with Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the quirky half-human, half-witch girl from Archie Comics and Nickelodeon's iconic TV series. Archie Comics, under its brand Archie Horror, released a more realistic and darker approach to the series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Soon enough, Netflix also released an adaption of the same name in 2018, led by an outstanding cast that would become some of the most iconic names of their generation, including Kiernan Shipka and Ross Lynch.

People looking for a lighthearted, feel-good TV series shouldn't start watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This outstanding twist on Sabrina Spellman includes religious horror, bloody scenes, and thrilling spooky sequences. However, some episodes stand out above others for taking their creepiness to the next level.

IMDb Score:

Season 4 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is the least liked in the series, but this episode is an exception. "Chapter Thirty-Three: Deus Ex Machina" follows Sabrina Morningstar as several realms start to fuse. In the middle of the chaos, Sabrina manages to jump into a parallel universe, which just so happens to be the 1996 Sabrina the Teenage Witch classic TV series.

In this realm, Sabrina encounters Aunt Hilda and Aunt Zelda from this universe, played, of course, by the iconic Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea. With many metatextual jokes and allusions to the old TV series that evoked nostalgia for fans, this episode became a fan favorite. Even though plot-wise it isn't as fascinating as other episodes in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it's still an amazing crossover.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Killing Female Protagonists Is NOT Revolutionary

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ends with the death of a major female character. Killing women is never revolutionary, so why does it keep happening?

"Chapter One: October Country" is a great pilot. It perfectly introduces the characters of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the setting, and the general vibe of the show. Most fans fell in love with the show precisely because of how great this introductory episode is. It follows Sabrina in the days before her sixteenth birthday when she needs to decide whether she wishes to lead a human life or go through her Dark Baptism to follow a witch's life.

"October Country" perfectly manages the balance between the horror ambiance, quirky humor, and small-town charm. The contrast between Sabrina's cozy life in Greendale with her adorable friends, including her boyfriend Harvey, her family's funeral business, and her half-witch life makes for an intriguing plot that keeps the audience hooked.

8 "Chapter Twenty-Seven: The Judas Kiss" Is Full of Exciting Plot Twists

Faustus Blackwood heads a new church in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 4.

Season:

3

Episode:

IMDb Score:

8.2

"The Judas Kiss" is an eventful episode. Ms. Wardwell shoots Aunt Zelda, who ends up in a limbo state. In the meanwhile, a dark omen seems to threaten the Spellman family. The audience discovers that Lilith is bearing Lucifer's child, a boy. Faustus seeks revenge on the witches, and Sabrina looks for Judas' 30 pieces of silver. Prudence kills Agatha after Agatha kills Dorcas, who is later killed by Faustus. The pagans also threaten Greendale as they look for a virgin, in this case Harvey, to sacrifice.

The episode is intense, to say the least, as the show gets ready for its fourth and final season. It's full of the deaths of many beloved characters, and it keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. This is the moment where the drama seems to come to a head in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and people truly enjoyed the thrilling episode.

In the first episode of the second season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the eponymous character starts her full-time studies at the Academy of Unseen Arts. The second episode of the season, "Chapter Thirteen," follows Sabrina as she tries to decide her moral alignment. Now that she's truly committed to being a witch, the Dark Lord tests her loyalty. Sabrina is undecided at first, but she finally gets on his side after he threatens her human friends. What's more, Sabrina lands the lead role, Lilith, in the school play, The Passion of Lucifer Morningstar, a hilarious play on the Passion of the Christ movie.

This episode continues to present the dark humor and fascinating plot lines from the first season. However, now that Sabrina is trying to commit more to her witch life, the series gets even more interesting. The stakes get higher as she continues to balance her human life with her immortal one, and the audience gets more and more invested in the series.

Why Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Witch Trial Resonates

The rhetoric used by Father Blackwood in the trial scene of the third episode of Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is chilling indeed.

The second episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina continues to show Sabrina's indecision between the mortal and the immortal realms. Her family and Father Blackwood prepare her Dark Baptism, but she ends up running away from it at the last minute, not certain of her commitment to the Dark Lord.

The episode showcases several exciting and terrifying scenes, such as the scenes the football team sees as Sabrina tricks them. It also has one of the best scenes of the show, with Sabrina and her witch friends punishing the football team after they bully Theo. The episode is iconic as it sees the celebration of Sabrina's sixteenth birthday on Halloween as well as her failed Dark Baptism. But still, the series had much more to offer in further episodes.

5 "Chapter Nineteen: The Mandrake" Shows Kiernan Shipka's Great Acting Skills

IMDb Score:

8.5

The Nineteenth chapter of the series is overloaded with tension, drama, and delicious creepiness. As the season gets ready for its closure, many of the main plots reach their climax. Manipulated by Ms. Wardwell, Sabrina creates a doppëlganger of herself, trying to stop her prophesied role as the Queen of Hell.

However, Sabrina's doppëlganger rebels and kidnaps her friends. Sabrina ends up having to engage in a duel with her other self, shooting her, and in the process fulfilling a prophecy that allows Lucifer to return to Earth. Not only is Kiernan Shipka's portrayal of an evil Sabrina outstanding, but Satan finally getting his angelic body makes for another exciting advancement in the series.

4 "Chapter Seventeen: The Missionaries" Goes Darker Than Ever

Season:

2

Episode:

6

IMDb Score:

9.0

As one of the darkest episodes in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the fandom was delighted with "The Missionaries." It depicts a fierce battle between witch-hunters, or missionaries, and the witches and warlocks. The episode leaves something clear: no side is truly good.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina spends a lot of its time producing satire against religion. Many of the themes of the series are religious elements turned dark. This time, though, actual angels appear, making the criticism even harsher. What's more, a hardcore scene of Satan forcing Lilith to eat Adam's head appears before Lilith commits herself fully to the Dark Lord. For those expecting a lighthearted series, they were proved fully wrong with this episode.

When Does Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Actually Take Place?

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set in a nostalgic, dreamlike era of vintage cars and rotary phones. But there are clues to the actual year.

"Feast of Feasts" is the perfect episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to watch on its own. The episode doesn't truly advance the plot but gives the audience a lot of insight into the Church of Night, the coven, and the rituals of the immortal ones. As its name suggests, the episode follows the preparations for the Feast of Feats, an annual ceremony in which the whole community eats whoever is selected as the Queen of the Feast. When Prudence is wrongly selected as the Queen of the Feast, Father Blackwood tries to cancel the event, but soon enough, Mildred cuts her own neck to continue with the ritual. Immediately, all the attendees start to carve up the body, voraciously feasting on the corpse.

"Chapter Seven" isn't only a thrilling and shocking episode, but it also comments on the dangers of religious fanaticism. The Church of Night community is willing to kill one of their own -- taking into account that they are immortal after all -- and eat them as beasts, in the name of their Dark Lord.

2 "Chapter Twenty: Mephisto Waltz" Offers a Lot of Intense Emotions for the Season Finale

The second season's finale quickly became a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fan-favorite episode. "Chapter Twenty: Mephisto Waltz" follows the coronation of Sabrina as Queen of Hell, followed by Lilith's coronation. The two scenes are iconic and lay the path for a more turbulent and fascinating third season.

The episode is also full of plot twists and intrigue. Father Blackwood escapes with his twin children after poisoning many members of the coven. Sabrina, together with her witch and warlock friends and the help of Lilith, defeats the Dark Lord, incarcerating him in Nick's body. Meanwhile, Harvey, Roz, and Theo fight the demonic forces threatening Greendale. It all makes an exciting episode full of horror, action and even some surprisingly hilarious moments.

1 "Chapter Ten: The Witching Hour" Is the Most Iconic Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Episode

Season:

1

Episode:

10

IMDb Score:

8.5

"The Witching Hour" finally shows the moment everyone had been waiting for: Sabrina signing the Book of the Beast. Madam Satan releases the Greendale Thirteen by sacrificing a student at the Hanging Tree. This leads Sabrina to turn into a full witch to unlock her powerful magic. Now a witch through and through, Sabrina burns the Hanging Tree and with it the Greendale Thirteen as well as the Red Angel of Death.

This episode is special because not only does Sabrina finally embrace her true powers and nature, but the audience gets to see how powerful she truly is. It's also the episode where a true war begins between Greendale and the Hell realm, a battle that will continue throughout the remaining seasons. Because of Kiernan Shipka's and Michelle Gomez's fantastic acting skills, this remains the best episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
