Highlights

  • Bret Hart's WCW accomplishments include 2-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, 4-time WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, and 1-time WCW World Tag Team Champion with Goldberg.
  • Bret Hart's career ended due to a severe concussion from a mule kick to the head by Bill Goldberg during their title match at Starrcade in 1999.
  • Bret Hart's final WCW appearance was on Thunder, where he had an angry promo about Goldberg hurting him, leading to a confrontation between the two.

It has been talked about to death of how Bret Hart left WWE in 1997, with a Montreal Screwjob on the way out, for WCW. The Hitman went from being the face of a company to another badly booked wrestler in a failing promotion. Still, he had some highlights, such as winning the WCW World Championship twice, but his second title reign ended his career. As we all know, Hart's career came to an end not long after taking a mule kick to the head from Bill Goldberg during their title match at Starrcade in 1999. The severe concussion he suffered would lead to his retirement, but many months later, in 2000, he showed up on WCW Thunder, in his last ever appearance for the company, to let Goldberg know what he thought about him one more time.

Bret Hart Was Forced To Retire Because Of A Move Gone Wrong

Bill Goldberg Accidentally Kicked Bret Hart In The Head

  • Bret Hart won his second WCW Championship.
  • The Hitman and Goldberg became WCW Tag Team Champions.
  • Bret Hart managed to finish the match and won at Starrcade 1999.

1999 was perhaps the worst year of Bret Hart's life. On May 23, his brother, Owen, died during a tragic stunt gone wrong live on a WWE pay-per-view. Before that, however, Hart was doing some of the best work of his WCW career, such as his fun feud with Goldberg where he memorably put a steel plate under his shirt, which knocked Bill out when he speared the Hitman. When Hart came back to WCW after Owen's passing, he finally started getting more of the push he deserved. On November 21, he won his second and last WCW World Heavyweight Championship. On December 7, he and Goldberg became the WCW World Tag Team Champions. Twelve days later, he and Goldberg battled for the WCW Championship at Starrcade in a match that would change both men forever.

It has been talked about ad nauseam, but during the match, Goldberg struck Hart with a legitimate mule kick to the head. The Hitman was able to finish the match and retain the gold, but on January 16, 2000, he was forced to vacate the title at Souled Out due to lingering concussion symptoms. Nine months later, he would retire, and outside of a short nostalgic run in WWE a decade later, he would never wrestle again.

WCW War Games 2000 on Nitro
  • Kevin Nash was WCW Champion.
  • Nitro's main event was War Games 2000.
  • Goldberg was about to exit the cage when Bret Hart smashed the door in his face.

2000 was a wild time for WCW during its final months of operation. With WWE having won the Monday Night Wars, the company was changing who held the world title left and right in order to try to pop a rating. It seldom worked. Going into the September 4, 2000 Nitro, Kevin Nash had been the champion since the week before. The main event for Nitro was called War Games 2000, and it was held inside of a three-tiered cage, like the one seen in the movie Ready to Rumble. The participants of the match were Kevin Nash, Jeff Jarrett, Scott Steiner, and Vince Russo vs. the team of Booker T, Goldberg, the tag team KroniK, and Sting, with the man who escapes the cage carrying the title becoming the WCW Champion.

During the match, fan favorite Goldberg was handcuffed to the ring ropes and looking down and out until he busted out of his restraints. Just as he was about to escape, however, who should appear but Bret Hart, who slammed the cage door in his face, followed by Scott Steiner hitting Goldberg with a pipe. Vince Russo handed the belt to Nash, who walked out to retain his WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

Bret Hart's Last WCW Appearance Was On Thunder

  • Bret Hart said Goldberg cost him millions of dollars.
  • Golberg told the Hitman he had remorse but was sick of his whining.
  • Scott Steiner attacked Goldberg from behind.

Two nights later, on Thunder, Bret Hart would show up in WCW for the very last time for a very raw promo that was as real as it gets. Working as a heel, Hart came out and showed footage of Goldberg kicking him in the head the year before. Hart said that the kick cost him millions of dollars. The Hitman said he had 10% disability to his brain and he couldn't buy the ranch he wanted to. Hart felt like a circus animal waiting to be taken out and shot. He screamed that Goldberg not only tried to end his career but his life.

Having heard enough, Goldberg marched to the ring as Hart yelled, "Finish the job." The commentators called Hart a bitter, crying man, but Goldberg was more calm, not attacking Hart when he stood across from him. Goldberg said he was restraining himself because he had remorse, and sometimes he wished it was him that was hurt. This angered Hart, who said he wished it was Goldberg too. Bret told Bill that he never reached out to him after the injury, that he only cared about himself. Goldberg came back, saying he used to look up to Bret Hart, but not anymore. He'd heard enough of Bret's whining in the media and told Hart he wasn't worth it. Goldberg tried to leave, but when Bret told him he never had it, Bill got back in the ring, only to be attacked from behind by Scott Steiner with a pipe again. Scott then put Goldberg in a Steiner Recliner as Bret Hart mocked him.

Bret Hart would never be seen in WCW again, but he certainly wasn't done with Goldberg. Over two decades later, Bret Hart drags Goldberg through mud for hurting him any chance he gets, whether it be in interviews or the recent Who Killed WCW? docuseries.
