Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, Chancellor of the University on the Niger, stated that the institution was designed to continue the educational and moral impact established by early missionaries of the Church Missionary Society (CMS).
During the inaugural matriculation ceremony held at the University Auditorium in the Archbishop C.J. Patterson International Complex, Onitsha, he shared his reflections.
He highlighted the profound impact of the early missionaries, expressing his confidence that the University would not only sustain but surpass the achievements of these pioneers.
While congratulating the matriculants, Bishop Nwokolo challenged them to embrace an academic journey that promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, preparing them for impactful and successful futures. He urged the students to fully engage with their studies and the opportunities presented to them, emphasizing that their time at the University on the Niger would equip them with the essential knowledge, skills, and values needed to make meaningful contributions to society.
In an eloquent address on the theme “Tertiary Education in the 21st Century: Identifying the Missing Gaps and Harnessing the Opportunities,” Chief Osita Chidoka delivered an inspiring lecture to the students. He captivated the audience with his words, urging them to embrace their educational journey with unwavering dedication, passion, and resilience.
Highlighting the sacred importance of the University as a revered citadel of learning and intellectual growth, Chief Chidoka challenged the students to cherish this institution and make the most of the opportunities it offers.
He shared a timeless wisdom, saying, “In the folklore, the harmony of Uche (Sense) and Uchu (Hard work) coupled with Egwu Chukwu (the fear of God) paves the path to excellence. Conversely, Uche and Uchu without Egwu Chukwu may lead one astray.” This poignant message emphasized the value of wisdom, hard work, and moral grounding in achieving personal success and contributing positively to society.
Vice Chancellor of the institution, Very Rev. Prof. Chinedu Nebo expressed gratitude to God for the university’s progress so far and prayed for God’s continual guidance and prosperity upon the school.
He restated the vision and commitment of the university as a unique multi-lingual institution to sound moral, entrepreneurial and academic upbringing.
Royal Father of the day and Obi of Onitsha, HRM Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi) congratulated the newly matriculated students, just as he commended the Chancellor’s visionary leadership and commitment to academic excellence, with a focus on the upcoming generations.

The University, a faith based institution is owned and managed by the Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion.
