The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recorded a footfall of over 69 lakh passengers on Friday when heavy rains lashed the city and its surrounding areas.

On June 28, the DMRC reported 69,36,425 passenger journeys, a significant increase from the 62,58,072 journeys recorded the day before. According to Delhi Metro officials, this surge of almost seven lakh additional journeys suggests that many commuters opted for the Metro over private vehicles or other modes of travel due to the adverse weather conditions.

Despite the heavy rainfall causing waterlogging outside some Metro station premises and at the entry and exit points, the DMRC maintained uninterrupted services throughout the day. The Metro operated with a punctuality rate of 99.95 per cent, officials said.

On Friday, Delhi saw its highest June rainfall in 88 years – recording 288.1 mm of rainfall in 24 hours – leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic snarls in the national capital. According to the weather department data, after 1936, the city has recorded its highest rainfall in the last 88 years and the second highest in the period from 1901 to 2024.

The deluge inundated the capital’s infrastructure and commuters found themselves stranded for hours, with the Traffic Police reporting congestion on major roads like the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Aurobindo Marg, Tilak Bridge, Rohtak Road, and Minto Road, among others.

The heavy winds and rain also purportedly caused the canopy at IGI Airport’s T1 to collapse in the early hours of Friday morning, smashing four cars, killing one and injuring eight others.
