2022’s highest grossing horror film described as “unhinged” by audiences will finally available to stream on Netflix in the UK from tomorrow (July 9).

Revered by die-hard horror fans, Smile follows the story of a therapist (played by Sosie Bacon) whose life is turned upside down after she witnesses the bizarre death of a patient, sparking a string of disturbing and downright shocking supernatural phenomena. Perhaps most terrifying of all, the paranormal entity at the centre of the film initially appears as a smiling person before its true nature is revealed.

The film brought in $200 million at the box office upon its release, despite a modest $17 million budget, making it the highest-grossing horror of that year. It has quickly established itself as one of the most disturbing films of the decade due to its clever jump scares, unnerving soundtrack and the sustained sense of creeping dread it evokes. In short, it’s not for the faint of heart.

Eagle-eyed viewers may also spot a very familiar face, as Jessie T. Usher plays the character of Trevor. The star has since had a major role in the Amazon Prime hit The Boys , playing speedy superhero A-Train.

Netflix viewers outside of the UK have been able to stream Smile for some time now, with the film climbing into Netflix’s global list of its top 10 most-watched movies and TV shows in May. It had a total watch time of 4.7 million hours in just its first week on the chart, and as of tomorrow, UK viewers can finally get in on the action too.

A sequel to Smile titled Smile 2 is slated for release on October 18 this year. According to the official synopsis, the film follows “global pop sensation Skye Riley” who begins experiencing “increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events” as she comes to terms with the pressures of fame. The cast includes You alum Lukas Gage and Naomi Scott in the starring role.

In an interview with SiriusXM's Jess Cagle Show, Gage said that filming the sequel had left him feeling "physically ill" and that he even "vomited off-camera" during one particular scene. If that sounds appealing to you, you better add the first film to your watch list.

Smile is available to stream on Netflix from July 9.
