July 1, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Over 55,400 people have fled Sinjah Town, Sennar State, following the escalation of conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The clashes, which began in Jebel Moya on June 26th, spread to Sinjah Town on June 29th, causing widespread panic and displacement. Residents fled due to fighting, looting, and security concerns, with most seeking refuge in the Al Rahad locality in Gedaref State.

“Field teams reported that approximately 55,440 individuals were displaced from Sinja town and neighbouring villages, as well as from various locations in Abu Hujar and Ad Dali localities, due to increased security concerns,” reads a report by the DTM Sudan on Mondy.

Reports indicate that the RSF has taken control of key government buildings and infrastructure in Sinjah Town. There are also unverified reports of transportation difficulties and escalating costs for those attempting to flee.

The Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) in Gedaref State anticipates up to 130,000 people could be displaced from Sennar State in the coming days. This includes both residents and internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had previously sought refuge in the state.

The UN and humanitarian partners are mobilizing to address the growing crisis, with the World Food Programme (WFP) reporting sufficient food stocks in Gedaref to support the initial influx of displaced people of up to 50,000 people.

However, the displacement comes at a challenging time, as state governments are reopening schools and relocating IDPs from existing shelters. There is pressure on humanitarian organizations to provide emergency assistance and shelter, with threats of office closures if support is not forthcoming.

The conflict has also disrupted communication networks, making it difficult to obtain accurate information from Sennar State. Further updates on the situation and humanitarian needs will be provided as they become available.
