NAFDAC shuts 4 bakeries in Port Harcourt

In a sustained bid to stamp out the prevalence of quack and substandard bakeries in Rivers state, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down four unregistered bakeries in Port Harcourt. 

 In a release signed by the Director, South South Zone of NAFDAC, Pharm. Chukwuma Oligbu, Thursday, the agency said “the bakeries were operating without registration license and with very poor Good Hygienic Practice (GHP).”

The statement added that, “Pans with dough were being kept on the floor, the make shift buildings with open and uncovered windows; bakery workers were not well kitted with PPEs, Lister generator set were sited inside the production rooms and they were no factory flow etc.” 

The bakeries shut down according to the statement were He Reigns Bakery,  Okabie Street, off Bakery Road, Rumuigbo; Divine Freedom Bread, Omasi Street, Rimuomasi; De Heroes Bakery, Wonda Street, Psychiatric Road; and The Lord’s Abundant Bakery, Elder Ezebunwo Street off Obi Wali road Rumuigbo, Port Harcourt.

The director of the agency further said the four bakeries visited were subsequently shut down and the owners directed to report at the zonal office for questioning, while investigations continued. 

The statement added that the samples of the bread were taken for laboratory for analysis.
