‘There's a Lot of Pressure’: Deadpool & Wolverine Villain Comments on Superhero Fatigue
Deadpool & Wolverine star Emma Corrin shared their reaction regarding superhero fatigue, ahead of their impending Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Corrin is slated to portray X-Men villain Cassandra Nova in Marvel Studios’ first-ever R-rated MCU movie.
During an interview with GQ magazine, Corrin addressed moviegoers’ ongoing superhero fatigue which led recently released Marvel movies to perform poorly at the box office. They expressed their confidence in Deadpool & Wolverine by citing the Deadpool franchise’s ability to always break the mold. "There's a lot of pressure on it, but I think that it’s the right one at the right time," Corrin said. "Because it's Deadpool, and Deadpool has always broken the mold, right? That’s why Ryan [Reynolds] is a literal genius. When the genre has been incredibly safe, and at the moment, it's on the rocks, people come in and blow it out of the water again."
Shawn Levy discusses initial conversations about bringing back Hugh Jackman for Deadpool & Wolverine and the request that got Kevin Feige on board.
For their first role as a villain, Corrin drew inspiration from other popular antagonists in cinema, including Christoph Waltz’s Nazi character Hans Landa in 2009’s Inglourious Basterds and Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. "They wanted her to be unpredictable," they said. "[Waltz's character is] so disarmingly polite and nice and unaffected, and it's really creepy. It's all the more sinister because he doesn't need to do anything." Reynolds also previously teased Corrin’s Gene Wilder-inspired performance, promising that Cassandra Nova would be an instant fan-favorite. "Emma is so fucking excellent at humanizing even the most chaotic lines," he said. "The only thing we love more than hating a villain is loving one. And we love Emma's Cassandra Nova from the jump."
Deadpool & Wolverine is directed by Shawn Levy, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. In addition to Reynolds and Corrin, the ensemble cast will also include Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, Matthew Macfadyen as TVA agent Paradox, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Rob Delaney as Peter, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. It will also feature Aaron Stanford as John Allerdyce/Pyro from Fox’s X-Men franchise, Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios from 2003’s Daredevil and 2005’s Elektra movies, Tyler Mane as Sabretooth, and more surprise Marvel cameos.
Deadpool & Wolverine helmer Shawn Levy continues to have a good time addressing the rumored celebrity cameos in the MCU film.
Besides Corrin, Levy also previously commented on the pressure of meeting fan expectations, revealing that he hopes that Deadpool & Wolverine can alleviate fan worries about the future of the franchise. "We had no idea it would be this unique moment where people are asking what the MCU means anymore," Levy said. "Can it surprise us? Can it break molds in ways that we don't expect? We certainly hope that this movie is an answer to those questions." In a separate interview, Levy promised that fans are "going to lose their damn minds" due to some scenes in the upcoming movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine debuts in theaters on July 26, 2024.
