The early discharge sought by India of its nationals who were “misled” into fighting for Russia against Ukraine is expected to be discussed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow next week, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said Friday.

Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss issues of regional and global interest when they meet next week on Monday and Tuesday, said Kwatra. They will also discuss bilateral ties including matters related to defence, investment, education, culture, and people-to-people ties.

Kwatra said the 22nd annual India-Russia Summit is taking place after three years, and “we attach great importance to it”.

After his trip to Russia, Modi will travel to Austria on July 9 and 10, the first visit by an Indian PM to that country in 41 years.

At least four Indian nationals have been killed in the war so far. India estimates anywhere between 30 and 40 of its citizens could be already serving, Kwatra said.
