Aiyedatiwa To Build New Stadium, Upgrade Old One

In a move to explore the sporting sector for socio-economic development, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has disclosed that efforts are ongoing to build a new stadium in the state capital, Akure.

The governor, who was represented at the Olympics Day Run on Saturday by his deputy, Mr. Olayide Adelami, disclosed that the contract for upgrading of the Akure Sports Stadium to international standard has been awarded.

Aiyedatiwa assured that the state government would continue to prioritise sports in the scheme of things and pay attention to the welfare of athletes and other sports men and women in the state.

Olympians, sportsmen and women commenced the run from Government House ground, Alagbaka to the state Sports Complex Akure in commemoration of the Olympics Day celebration.

He described sports as a good avenue for social interaction and integration amongst youths in the state and the country at large.

According to him, “Sports is very dear to our hearts in Ondo State and our administration will not relent in its efforts to engage the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a chosen career to gainfully employ the youth.”

Governor said efforts were also ongoing to ensure that work commenced at the new stadium site to decentralise over stretching of the old stadium.

He explained that “The contract for the upgrading of Akure township stadium has been awarded by the state government to a reputable contractor to make the facilities meet international standards for the use of the sports loving people of Ondo state.

“Other stadia in Ondo, Ikare and Ile Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet the yearnings and aspiration of the people.

“Efforts are going on to award the contract of the new stadium at Araromi in Akure to de centralise the over stretching of facilities at the Ondo State Sports Complex and to enhance sports development in the state.

“Our administration will continue to give necessary priority to sports.”

The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Saka Yusuf Ogunleye explained that “The extension of the event to Ondo State is a clear indication that sports promote global peace.

“It’s the commitment of to prioritise sports and engage the youths meaningful through sporting activities. Sports facilities are upgraded all over the state.

“Ondo State athletes are able to compete with their counterpart outside the state and winning laurels thereby representing Nigeria in international competitions.”

The representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr Sylvester Ikuejamoye, in his comment, said sport keeps the mind and body strong and healthy.
