Hollywood star Mark Ruffalo challenged French President Emmanuel Macron’s commitment to democracy late Tuesday.

“Now we will see if Macron cares about French Democracy in the way he claims to,” Ruffalo said, as Macron’s French centrist camp weighed whether to strategically withdraw candidates in order to try prevent the far-right National Rally (RN) from potentially gaining a majority in parliament after Sunday’s upcoming legislative election.

Ruffalo, famous for playing the green superhero Hulk in the Avengers film franchise, referenced a Guardian story published Monday that broke down the unexpected unity of France’s left-wing coalition in countering the rise of the National Rally.

After the first-round vote last Sunday, candidates had until 6 p.m. Tuesday to withdraw from run-off races before the second-round vote Sunday, in order to solidify support around single candidates to compete with those put up by the National Rally.

The chances of an outright victory for the far right fell Tuesday, as centrist and left-wing candidates reluctantly banded together to try to stop Marine Le Pen’s National Rally from taking power for the first time.

Ruffalo’s post came after the Tuesday evening deadline, when more than 200 candidates from both the left-wing and centrist camps had already withdrawn, to unite against Le Pen. Voters are choosing lawmakers for the French National Assembly’s 577 electoral districts, with 289 seats needed for an absolute majority.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, of Macron’s bloc, on Wednesday encouraged centrist voters to indeed vote for candidates from far-left France Unbowed over the National Rally.
