Runway project and deployed A-10 Thunderbolts clears the air over SANG
It’s going to be a quiet summer.
Macomb County residents and aviation enthusiasts who follow the air traffic around Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township will probably notice a little less action overhead now that approximately 350 airmen assigned to Selfridge Air National Guard 127th Wing’s A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft mission have been deployed to an undisclosed location, according to a news release from SANG.
There’s also a runway repair project set to start and that has required the military to disperse the KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft mission to Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus and Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport in Gwinn.
That will further impact local flight operations for the next three months.
Coast Guard Air Station Detroit and Customs and Border Protection air missions will remain at Selfridge ANGB during the runway repair project.
Cadillac Asphalt, LLC, based in Canton, was awarded the contract for the $9.8 million construction project, which requires them to remove and replace nearly 20 acres of asphalt at a depth of 6.25 inches, and complete structural repairs in three separate locations. The project is estimated to employ more than 100 construction workers.
The KC-135’s will return to normal operations at SANG after the runway repairs are done.
The 127th Wing is composed of approximately 1,500 personnel, flying both the A-10 Thunderbolt II and the KC-135 Stratotanker, who support both the Air Mobility Command and Air Combat Command by providing highly-skilled Airmen to missions domestically and overseas.
The 127th Wing is the host unit at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which marked its 107th year of continuous military air operations in 2024.
