One product can bizarrely be used to clean up its own mess in your bathroom, while the other is more likely to be found in your fridge.

Cleaning the bathroom probably tops the list of most hated chores around the house for many. There are few people who relish the idea of scrubbing away at nasty toilet stains or wiping hairs and grime off the sink, bath and shower, so any tips on how to make the rotten task a little quicker and easier are always welcome.

One cleaning expert reckons she has discovered the best way to erase two very common problems in the bathroom that will leave the room sparkly clean and her method uses two products that are more than likely already in your home. The first issue concerns the annoying mess that children (and some adults) leave after brushing their teeth. It’s pretty common to see sinks spattered in blobs and smears of toothpaste that hasn’t been wiped away and leaves the much used area looking dirty and unhygienic.

However, there’s a very quick and simple way to solve the problem, using the actual stuff that caused it in the first place, according to Sarah Dempsey from MyJobQuote, a UK-based company connecting homeowners with tradespeople. She recommends utilising the toothpaste to restore the shine using a damp cloth: "Next time you notice toothpaste marks around the sink, grab a sponge or damp cloth and give your sink a quick scrub with it," she said.

"The toothpaste residue will act as a gentle cleaner for the bathroom and will leave your sink looking sparklingly clean and smelling minty fresh." Sarah also shared another top tip for a second tricky area - the toilet. No one wants their loo looking unsightly covered in stains but it’s a grotty job donning rubber gloves and getting your hands down the pan to scrub away. Marks that have been left to fester can be seemingly impossible to shift.

However Sarah claims a fizzy drink that you will likely have in the fridge but that is readily available at little expense is great for removing stubborn stains in your toilet. Bizarrely she claims that Coca-Cola, as well as being a popular soft drink, is actually really good at cleaning the loo. It is always advisable to check the manufacturer’s advice on cleaning your particular model though before using any products that could potentially damage the surface of the material.

If you are happy that your toilet can be exposed to the drink, Sarah says you simply have to pour it around the inside: "Grab a bottle and pour it around the rim of your toilet bowl," she told The Sun. "Leave it to do its thing for roughly an hour and then give it a good scrubbing with your toilet brush. "This will effectively remove all of the stubborn stains from the toilet bowl and leave it fresh and clean." The slightly strange alternative to normal cleaning products works because the drink contains carbonic, citric, and phosphoric acids, which slowly eats away at the limescale and other stains.
