The Canterbury rugby fraternity today gathered in Christchurch to pay tribute to the late Shayne Philpott — who tragically died in a medical event a week ago.

"It's been a bloody tough week," Shayne's brother Darryl told 1News. "Life throws these curve-balls... but I think Shayne would love the send-off he's getting at the rugby club today."

That's Burnside Rugby Club — where Philpott's career began.

"I know he had the All Blacks in the late 80's, but the highlight for him would be the '91 club final against Sydenham at Lancaster Park — he just loved Burnside," Darryl said.

Philpott, a utility back, played more than 100 games in the red and black jersey, as well as 12 games and two Tests for the All Blacks between 1988 and 1991.

Former teammate and close friend, Rob Penney, told 1New Philpott was "one of the best".

"Obviously, he got honoured with the All Blacks jersey at a time when he was coping with bad injuries and was never able to fulfil his potential... but he would make it in today’s environment. He was that good."

Penney, like many others, was still deeply shocked by Philpott's sudden passing.

"He's a genuine, whole-hearted sort of person that, when you're around him, he made a difference and was just a joy to be around.

"He wasn't without his complexities, but he was quite shy and it was lovely when he unshackled and unleashed a little bit of his hidden personality — he could be a great deal of fun," said Penney.

Daryl said he'll remember his brother as "a good man".

"He was a very kind man, a loving father, a good club man — a genuine all round good guy."

Philpott was 58.
