National Weather Service issues ‘hazardous weather outlook’ for parts of CT

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for parts of Connecticut,
northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, starting Monday.

For Sunday the service forecast for Connecticut includes a slight chance of showers, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 1 p.m. The chance of precipitation is 70%, according to the service. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible, with a high near 87.

For Hartford Sunday the service forecasts: “A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Some of the storms could be severe and produce heavy rainfall.”

WTNH reports a forecast for Sunday that includes “some severe thunderstorms are likely in the afternoon,” Sunday so “be ready to head inside to stay safe! Damaging winds will be the main threat, along with torrential rain, lots of lightning, hail and low chance for a tornado somewhere in the tri-state area.”

Further, NBC Connecticut’s Darren Sweeney reports that, “The StormTracker weather team is monitoring the potential for showers and possible severe thunderstorms this afternoon” in Connecticut. “The main threat from today’s storms will be torrential rain, strong to possibly damaging wind gusts and the tornado threat is low, but not zero.”

And the WFSB forecast for Sunday notes, “Some storms in the afternoon and again early this evening will likely be strong to severe…greatest impact will likely be frequent lightning, followed by downpours and strong and damaging wind gusts. ”

Connecticut was hit by a widespread storm last week that knocked out power, took down trees, blocked roads and damaged homes. A man was killed by a falling tree in Willimantic.

Tonight, the National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms likely before midnight, then a slight chance of showers between midnight and 3 a.m. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Then, on Monday, thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening, with the possibility of some becoming severe with the “main threat from damaging wind gusts in excess of 58 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

“There is also a possibility of hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out,” according to the weather service. “Any thunderstorm may produce frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Localized flash flooding is also possible.”

The service forecast for now includes Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, New London counties.
