Rex was buried in Machakos county on Friday, July 6, in a sombre ceremony attended by family, friends, and public figures.
Some prominent figures at the burial included Embakasi East MP Babu Owini, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and human rights activist Boniface Mwangi.
A video shared by Boniface on X showed the heartbreaking moment the young man's coffin was lowered into his final resting place.
Rex's casket was draped in the Kenyan national flag.
His loved ones were downcast as they bid their last goodbyes to Rex, with several people breaking down.
“We have faceless people who occupy X, and then there are some of us who have influence both online and offline. We were approached to compromise but refused. We have no beef with Zakayo as long as he applies the spirit of the 2010 constitution,” Boniface wrote.
Kenyans paid tribute to Rex by writing:
@BeingPillar:
"No parent should bury their children."
@BennonMaina:
"His death will not be in vain."
@nuruokanga11:
"Rex shall forever remain in our hearts."
Gillian Munyao, the mother, emotionally described her son's final moments before the deadly shooting.
She mentioned Masai was teargassed with other demonstrators close to the Kenya National Archives.
Munyao learned about her son's situation from a friend who revisited the scene after an unidentified police officer fired at the protestors, and Rex was missing.
