Design Concept
The vaulted house is a groundbreaking architectural masterpiece designed for an artist, blending site context and client's background seamlessly. The original structure, a modest 2 BHK GF residence built over two decades ago, in the outskirts of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), underwent a transformative expansion without demolishing the existing structure. Situated in a Hot and Dry climate zone in a densely populated area, the design's innovation lies in its ability to merge tradition with modernity.
Revolutionizing Space Allocation
The 4 BHK layout spans across three floors (GF, FF & SF), strategically placing Living, kitchen, Dining, Master Bed, and Guest bed on the ground floor. The first floor houses the sons’ bedrooms, while the client's Den occupies the second floor. A key feature is the central Dining area, which pierces the old slab, forming a three-floor high stepped courtyard. This design not only floods the house with natural light throughout the year but also creates a natural ventilation system, expelling hot air during summers and capturing sunlight in winter.
Innovative Spatial Planning
The staircase, divided into three parts on different levels due to the existing stairs in the NE corner, influenced a multi-level terraced design across three floors. Each room boasts an outdoor space with a unique ambiance. The first floor's exposed concrete cantilevered slab offers privacy and openness simultaneously, framing panoramic views of the tree canopy outside. The NW corner bedroom features a vaulted ceiling for thermal regulation, while the SW corner bedroom's skylight-enhanced toilet promotes natural light and ventilation.
Creating Personalized Spaces
The Den, a creative sanctuary for the client, is designed with glass walls, overlooking a lotus pond. Encased in a brick jaali wall for privacy and ventilation, the room's high ceiling and vaulted structure aid in passive cooling. Accessible from two terraces with distinct views, the Den fosters a visual and spatial connection between different levels of the house, amplifying the artistic essence of the space.
Holistic Material Palette
The material selection reflects the client's humble origins, featuring kota stone slabs, exposed brick, reclaimed wood, and concrete elements sourced locally. The design ethos, characterized by stepped terraces, vaulted ceilings, and rustic materials, narrates the artist's journey - resilient, fluid, and enduring.
In Conclusion
The Vaulted House stands as a testament to architectural innovation, seamlessly blending tradition with modernity while offering personalized living spaces that reflect the client's identity and aspirations. Through a thoughtful fusion of spatial design, materiality, and craftsmanship, Vrushaket Pawar + Architects (VP+A) have redefined modern architecture in Aurangabad, setting a new benchmark for creative excellence.
