5 Of The Best Sober-Friendly Bars And Restaurants In Halifax, Nova Scotia

Forbes 2024/10/6

The Halifax bar and restaurant scene used to be dominated by pubs and casual eateries—and while there are still a lot of really great spots to grab a humble pint and a plate of fish and chips, the city has really taken off when it comes to internationally-inspired and more open-minded eating and dining experiences.

That ethos has also trickled down to the cocktail menu—and particularly low- and no-alcoholic options that go beyond, you know, the Shirley Temple or Arnold Palmer.

The non-alcoholic industry as a whole has certainly come into its own in the past few years but the following restaurants and bars have taken their own unique spin on low-alcoholic drinks with creative cocktails that taste grown up rather than juvenile or phoned-in:

Dear Friend Bar

“Last time we were at Dear Friend I was the DD and they made me something tasty that felt grown up,” said one Reddit user. “It was awesome since I usually feel like I'm stuck at the kiddie table when ordering as the DD.” Dear Friend Bar in Dartmouth offers more than six non-alcoholic beer and cocktail options on its menu—but also encourages patrons to chat with the bartender for a personalized non-alcoholic “Bartender’s Choice” creation.

Field Guide

Field Guide has spectacular virgin cocktail options,” added one Reddit user. The North End restaurant has a half dozen really strong non-alcoholic options on its menu, including a delicious zero-proof margarita and a “café tonique” which is essentially a non-alcoholic espresso martini—with maple syrup and cinnamon!

The Carlton

“I’ve had some great ones at The Carlton while in there listening to music,” said another Reddit user, adding that the bar has an entire menu of mocktails and non-alcohol options that include unique flavors like allspice syrup and lavender lemonade.

Highwayman

“The bartenders at Highwayman made me a non-alcoholic cocktail that tasted a lot like a negroni,” added another Reddit user. “It was the best I've had anywhere!” The Spanish-influenced restaurant is best known for its tapas but sober patrons will be thrilled to find a decent variet of non-alcoholic cocktails and beer a well.

Bar Sofia

Bar Sofia has some amazing mocktails,” said one Reddit user. The Queen’s Marque darling is well-loved for its incredibly flavorful appetizer menu (the Brussels sprouts are always a crowd pleaser) but it also boasts some super unique non-alcoholic cocktails with ingredients like clove-infused forest honey and smoked sea salt.
