More than 200 acres of ecologically significant upland forest and forested wetlands along Accokeek Creek in Stafford County have been acquired by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, ensuring protection for biodiversity conservation.

Expansion of Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation recently acquired a 228-acre Accokeek Bottomlands parcel, adding to the Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve. This addition brings the total acreage of the preserve to 3,343, located in a rapidly developing area in northern Virginia. Crow's Nest, dedicated in 2008 as the state's 54th preserve, offers public outdoor recreation amenities and hosts field trips for local schools and community groups. DCR, Stafford County, and the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust jointly own and manage the preserve, fostering successful conservation efforts at Crow's Nest.

Importance of the Addition

Jason Bulluck, director of DCR's Virginia Natural Heritage Program, highlighted the significance of the addition, stating, 'This expansion is vital for the future resiliency of Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve, providing habitat for rare plants and native wildlife. Our ongoing efforts, in collaboration with community partners, aim to monitor breeding bird and amphibian populations in the area, which is part of the Lower Potomac Important Bird Area designated by the National Audubon Society.' Last year, least bittern, a rare animal species, was documented in the marshes along Accokeek Creek by the natural areas stewardship staff.

Public Recreation and Conservation

Crow's Nest offers a tranquil setting for visitors to hike through mature hardwood forests, observe birds and wildlife, and enjoy views of creeks and ravines. Situated on a peninsula between two tidal creeks, the preserve provides amenities for kayaking and canoeing. The funding for the preserve's expansion was made possible by a grant from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation, celebrating its 25th year. With limited parking spots available on a first-come, first-served basis, visitors are encouraged to check the preserve web page before planning a trip to ensure a quiet and relaxing experience without overcrowding that could harm the sensitive natural resources the preserve aims to protect.

Preservation Efforts

Crow's Nest is one of 21 natural area preserves in Virginia that allows public access for low-impact recreation activities. The preservation of these ecologically significant lands is crucial for biodiversity conservation and the protection of rare plant species and native wildlife. Visitors are welcomed to explore the beauty of Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve and immerse themselves in its rich natural heritage.
